@@sandylawrence3704 I don't but that's a great idea for a video. I'm so behind on making videos. I'll put it on my list. As a quick answer I'd say each child is different for each subject. You should know how much each student can handle. Take cues from them. A rule I use is challenge your student but don't break them. Yes, I should do a video on this. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hello, I've been watching your videos, which I found by searching for reviews of the Barton System. My son is dyslexic and I have been homeschooling him for the past 6 years. He is reading pretty well now, but his spelling is atrocious. Do you think the Barton System would be a good fit for helping him with his spelling? He has passed the Student Screening, and I the Tutor Screening.
@teachingmoments8290
@teachingmoments8290 6 ай бұрын
Barton does help with spelling. It gives the reasons why we spell things the way we do. Be faithful to the process and it will help but know it takes time, patience and consistency.

Thanks for the review I’m looking for psychology for highschool homeschool. Is this a secular curriculum or Christian?
@teachingmoments8290
@teachingmoments8290 8 ай бұрын
This is a Christian curriculum. If your child plans on going to a college where they will have to take psychology I would say a definite yes, you should go through this curriculum. It brought up great things for us to discuss. We looked at some topics that will come up as they navigate this world but they can think about it from a Christian perspective. They weren't pushy in the Christian beliefs but gets a person to think. We have a Christ centered home but these topics were different than what we normally discuss. So if you're looking for a Christian curriculum, this could work for you. If you prefer secular you may not like this one.

I referred back to my video. At this spot I was thinking specifically with American Government class. Abeka can get pretty wordy. Some students need the basic bare bones to understand a topic. Especially when it comes to the government. I feel it's important for our kids to understand our government so they can play a part in it. Even if this means going below grade level at first. When they pick up on the concepts you can get deeper with them. There are some books about government by Syl Sobel, J.D. that I've used to help break concepts down. As for general history, I like Abeka. I have also used Drive Thru History videos for American history. If there's a particular topic your student is stuck on or wants to learn more about feel free to branch out. There's so many great books out there. I use Christian Book Distributors to search for different homeschool curriculum. You can look there. I hope that helps.

Hello! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I buy my Barton curriculum directly from Barton Reading. When you do you get a code to go online and use different resources. One of those resources are the cards. They are very helpful to review the material. Also when you buy from Barton Reading they include a flyer for different spelling games from Spelling Success. You can also find them at www.SpellingSuccess.com I have a few of their games. They're helpful and a nice break from the regular lessons. Book 8 can be tough. Keep it up. It's worth it.

I'm teaching an adult to read using this system, and we've completed the first 5 lessons in Level 1. For you, it's probably been awhile since you've gone over the material, but I have a question. My adult reader is dyslexic, and when it comes to changing the middle sound, he's struggling. I know it's because he's trying to keep all of the sounds in his head because the tiles have no clues (letters), but does this get easier the more he practices?
@teachingmoments8290
@teachingmoments8290 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think it gets easier when the letters are on the tiles. Remembering can be hard for those with dyslexia. Very normal.

I have 2 kid that I use Barton with. I'm curious how long it took on average for you to get thru level 8? We usually shoot for a lesson a week. Am I crazy to think i can get thru levels 8 and 9 in one year?
@teachingmoments8290
@teachingmoments8290 Жыл бұрын
Each student is so different. It's hard to gauge how quickly they will go through level 8. That level has 13 lessons and level 9 has 9 lessons so mathematically you could go through both levels in one year. That would be to lofty a goal for my taste though. It's important to focus on the student learning the material versus how fast you complete it. You don't want to rush through just to say you finished it.

We are about 1/4 of the way into Level 6. There's so much I appreciate from Barton, but the sentences and passages are WAY too grown up for my 11 year old. I would like to keep going, but there's zero reading comprehension. Kids don't have any background knowledge for things like interest. Did experience this problem with your kids? Did you find any ways around it?
@teachingmoments8290
@teachingmoments8290 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I did. Barton strings many big words together to make sentences we would never say in normal conversation. I understand they are trying to have the students practice the words they just learned but it sounds awkward. I read all the sentences to myself first then pick three to six of them that make the most sense. I explain what the words mean after he's read them. My youngest is 12 and at the end of book 6 so I understand what you're saying. I check his comprehension more with the stories than the sentences. With sentences I celebrate that he can read those big words. Hope that helps. Keep plugging away. It sounds like you're doing a good job. It will be worth it when they're reading well. As another little encouragement, my son just had something click for him and is reading better than I've seen. Not sure if it's his age or our consistency. Maybe both. Keep at it.

Thank you for your video! I just made the decision to switch my oldest, a 2nd grader, from Singapore to Math-U-See, and this video helped me feel even better about my decision. I had looked a bit into the others that you mentioned but didn't like the look of their workbooks. They were so overwhelming to look at with their colors and problems, and I like the idea of solidifying a concept before moving to another. Singapore did that, and I like the methods/concepts they teach, but it just didn't work well for either of us. I'm excited to use the manipulatives and videos and even the worksheets! Also, putting a little number line in front of them to help with writing the numbers the correct way is a great tip!

Is there a test to see what level your kid need?
@teachingmoments8290
@teachingmoments8290 2 жыл бұрын
No. Everyone, no matter the age, needs to start at level one. They even have adults start there. Barton is willing to work with you if you child flies through level one. You'll have to check out their website for details. Each level builds on the last so both student and teacher needs to go through each level. Some of my kids went very fast through the lower levels but it's good to go through them all so any gaps can be filled in.

I just found your channel while searching for Barton videos. Please make more like these. I haven’t met a homeschool mom who doesn’t worry about all the things you mentioned and we desperately need to hear encouragement from veteran homeschooling moms. We especially need to hear from those who have graduated children and are still schooling children at home because it’s easier to say “don’t worry” when your kids are all grown and you’re not still in the thick of it. So thank you!

I agree with your point about not teaching to fill time. In reality, I think teaching out to 3 decimal place values is sufficient, simply because you need to have the thousandths value in order to effectively round the hundredths. In the US, we deal with dollars and cents, so our general population needs to know, understand and be able to work competently and fluently with the thousandths place so that they understand why if the tax rate is 6.5% they're paying 1.07 at the register but after the thousandths place, it's not particularly helpful.
