A bit late, but if I remember right, he purposely threw the bet. The group he was with left a bad taste in his mouth so he took the opportunity to "lose" and switch sides. I believe if you max out support with Natasha and he proposes to her, he wagers it on a coin flip again and she wins, yet again, and he lets slip that he would have said he lost regardless of the outcome.
