@MartinLueders thanks, I get bored with analogue style modules! I think that digital synthesis methods are better for ambient, because you generally get more complex waveforms that you can slowly modulate for drones and evolving pads. Phase distortion, wavetable VCOs and FM all work really well.

really nice. noise into rings is one of my favourite sounds of the universe.
@VirtualModularАй бұрын
@Contang0 thanks, same here! There is a huge range of sounds you can make with this technique, using filters/fx on the noise, different random triggers etc to create different textures. You've obviously discovered this already but I'll make a tutorial for everyone else! Also, it's not necessary to use multiple Rings like this, there's a fully polyphonic Rings clone called Anuli in the library now. This is an old patch and I couldn't be arsed re-patching it 😂

@FlagAudioАй бұрын
Prodigal Son mentioned very cool, I do have a soft spot for 90s ambient pads in my heart :) and these sound great! (EDIT: pro-tip: Prodigal Son is stereo and I'd recommend using both outs)
@VirtualModularАй бұрын
@FlagAudio hey thanks, Prodigal Son is one of my favourite VCOs! I must admit I do get slightly confused where modules are both stereo *and* polyphonic. I know you can use both outputs and get multiple poly channels on each left/right output, but if you're going to take that signal and run it through filters/VCAs etc, then you need all the other modules in your signal chain to be stereo and polyphonic too, which limits the choices slightly. I usually use a kind of psuedo stereo effect, where I take a single (stereophonically mono) poly signal and pan the poly channels into a stereo pair, if that makes sense! This creates a wide stereo field but it does lose the stereo image from something like Prodigal Son. Coincidentally, I made a tutorial on polyphonic panning last week, it didn't get many views but I think it's a cool effect. I will definitely experiment with the proper stereo outputs too, but supersaws do need a stereo filter too for the classic lush pad! Cheers 👍
@GeorgeLockeАй бұрын
If you send a pair of polyphonic inputs into that poly spread using the "left" and "right" inputs, it doesn't seem to handle them very sensibly.
@VirtualModularАй бұрын
@GeorgeLocke yeah, it does exhibit some strange behaviour. I'm not sure why it has two audio inputs and only one of them works properly, although it does mention that in the manual page. There's a Venom module in the latest update, which may work better than this - see the thread on the forum about polyphonic utilities. I do like the effect of loads of channels being panned at once though, cheers!
@GeorgeLockeАй бұрын
@VirtualModular totally. I use the bogaudio pan module all the time for this.

this is what I was looking for all these years. Although I haven't watched the video in it's entirety ( yet. ), but I noticed valhalla supermassive vst in the rack, how did you import a third party vst in it? I don't use vcv though, I use cardinal and I'm used to it, so is there any way to bring such vsts into the rack? 😵💫
@VirtualModular2 ай бұрын
@deniswastaken hey, thanks for your comment! In the standalone version of VCV you can buy a module called Host-FX, which allows you to load VST effects modules. Unfortunately, that's not available in Cardinal as the choice of modules is fixed, and you can't load VCV premium modules. Could you not load Supermassive as an insert effect in your DAW? I use Cardinal with Reaper sometimes too, I've made a few tutorials for that too if you haven't seen them.
@deniswastaken2 ай бұрын
@@VirtualModular oh yeah, I completely forgot that I can insert it as an effect in my DAW, haha, you solved the problem. I have just started modular synthesis because I have to learn it from scratch and it can improve overall sound design, thanks for the suggestion, now I won't forget that. 😆
@VirtualModular2 ай бұрын
@@deniswastakenglad I could help. Modular is the best for sound design! Cardinal is great but there are advantages to running VSTs within VCV itself, you can modulate parameters using all the modular stuff, and you can also patch in feedback or combine VCV effects modules with VSTs too.

Why??? , because Music is equally about what notes you do NOT play. ;)
@VirtualModular3 ай бұрын
@@johnnybigpotato2404well that's true, but why not? Because you can is always a reasonable argument for me! Also I'm not using 16 notes at once, because the triggers are randomised. What polyphony does is allow the notes to overlap, so you get a richer sound. With effects, it's basically giving you multiple copies of an effect in parallel, but with different settings on each channel so again it's just creating a fuller sound.
