Electron John - you are surely and ACE Diagnostic Technician and certainly and ACE electronic technician who can quickly diagnose engine performance problems from waveform analysis of your signals. Thank you for sharing your vast diagnostic knowledge 🙂. Nothing under the hood scares me from trying to troubleshoot and repair my own vehicles. I have some electronic training and understanding of ac , dc physics. That being said , performing voltage drop testing and sensor signal testing / waveform analysis on automobiles is new to me BUT. I have an AUTEL bidirectional analyzer MS906BT - YOUR VIDEOS are simply fantastic - AGAIN - many thanks 👍 and HAPPY NEW YEAR ✌️🥂

Good video but don’t know why they push against the mobile guys that get training to get it done plus on a more flexible schedule. I can tell my customer just set it outside the door, we can program it after hours. Remote expert is only as good as the “expert” who sat in a OE class that a rep put on thru a seminar that any average person with a business can go to as parts supply houses host these. Really wish the scan tool mfrs would quit pushing against the mobile guys as most mobile guys I know do good work, do self training, invest in tools that some local big shops don’t want to invest in. Also mobile guys save shops time and tying up a tech as when we go in we deal with the service advisors, managers. We bring our own equipment, several thousands dollars worth, knowledge that remote experts aren’t going to see. Have several shops who’ve tried this method but cars have issues that remote experts can’t always fix. Get in the field and do the work!!

Having watched months of other videos, you have showed me how much I have missed, thinking that there is so much that is assumption after gathering info from meters and scanners, this is something I am not used to, my trade was working on electronic service repairs for the marine service and using an oscilloscope was an everyday occurrence using scopes worth thousands of dollars, even our cct diagrams had expected wave form under different conditions. Having used scan tools, I recently bought, it still left a lot to desire to repair a car, Having only watched 4 of your lectures has just opened everything up, as sone as you pulled out the scopes and showed the waveforms, it now is all starting to come together and making sense, thank you so much, if only we had the $200.00 multi lead scopes back then. We had to use a Polaroid camera with special adaptor to go on the scope to save images. LOL

For upstream HEGOs (narrow band, switching) closed loop fuel control, the strategy is a switching control (because the HEGO only detects two states, rich or lean) with a long time constant filter or a long time constant PI or PID control loop supplying learned fuel trim data, which is then used as a mean fuel bias level upon which the switching algorithm is optimized. If the learned fuel trims are correct for the current engine operating condition, the fuel switching algorithm will use a symmetrical jump back around stoichiometry, essentially trying to maximize the switching frequency. The upstream HEGO works well for this closed loop control because it is directly in the exhaust stream. The jump back (bang bang) control is not a controlled frequency as output, it will result in a set switching frequency if the fuel trims are perfect and the catalytic converter (CAT) operation optimal. The switching waveform is the result of everything in the control loop. The HEGO signal switching amplitude should not change pre and post CAT like shown in the drawing in the video if the two sensors are identical, and if the CAT was perfect the post HEGO would not switch at all (complete and efficient O2 control) or perhaps be pegged lean. In fact, the intermediate voltages (mid span) of the HEGO output between the normal rich lean switching thresholds are meaningless. So the CAT efficiency (or other such OEM words to describe CAT health, which is crude at best) makes sense only as a relative measure of the pre and post CAT HEGO switching characteristics. So, we can make inference between pre and post CAT switching but not amplitudes. For identical pre and post sensors the output should be the same, registering either rich or lean. This is where understanding the CAT monitor strategy OEM description is very important. Because it may imply that the CAT monitor is a special test pegging rich or lean at a certain point in the drive cycle to understand relative HEGO switching behavior. But, where in the drive cycle for emission would you intentionally control CAT breakthrough, ideally you wouldn't. This is why CAT OBD II monitor (test) is done over two complete drive cycles with specific operating conditions before the test is run. But, we could rephrase this and say the test is so crude that we don't want to set a DTC unless either the CAT or HEGO is spent. To really see the HEGO outputs it is best to directly probe the signals at the HEGOs (use differential scope probes) and not plot scan tool data.

I am not understanding the point of this. Seems extremely excessive. If you have an older Prius where the existing battery management system has failed, wouldn't it throw an error in the can? The amount of labor to do all of this just to tell someone they need a new battery pack, which often isn't worth it to replace. Help me out here because this seems scammy.

thanks for reaching out. one would diagnose the battery first using the scan tool as mentioned earlier in the video. one would only do this procedure if the battery was found to be good and just out of balance. balancing the battery will regain lost range and help extend the life of expensive battery.

@@electron-john By the same token, mechanics can just go thru the motions and not care if it starts or not, they get 150 plus tax for making shit up. Owners may have to spend a diagnostic fee, two towing fees and be in the same place they started.

@@user-sp8eb6iz7f I understand your point and unfortunately, there are some bad apples in every industry. Those that are truly passionate about their careers, also do not like those that prectice inferior methods and give the entire industry a bad name. Until the consumer market place weed those bad apples out by not falling for the low prices, they will continue to thrive. I like to explain it like this. A doctor spends a great deal of money and time getting a degree to practice medicine on a patient who’s mechanical makeup hasn’t really changed in years. A mechanic is working on patients whose composite and technical makeup changes yearly. The modern day vehicle has technological dvancements that compare and exceed most any other trade or industry including space travel! While it is true that they most likely did not have the initial expense of a doctors degree, the difference is they invest in personal tools and equipment and training their entire careers. This expense for those who take their careers serious, will surpass anything the doctors have spent. In most parts of the world mechanics are treated with the respect of medical professionals. Here in the US, sadly we are not due to those bad apples that are mentioned above. The only way they stay in business is by offering low prices that the general public falls for. As a mechanic I too have always been curious why this is. We don’t question expenses from going to the doctors for diagnostic tests, or having to pay one doctor to just tell you to go to a specialist and pay them and hope they can help you. We also always seem to have money for purchases like tv’s and whatever else we desire but are always looking for a discount on auto repairs. The car takes us and our families to work and provide safe journeys for us and our families but we never seem to think in those terms. Sadly, I do not have an answer or solution for what we are discussing here and I apologize if anybody that reads this gets upset. I am just trying to show the mentality of the professional mechanic while also sympathizing with the consumer and understanding that like doctors, plumbers, electricians, or any other trades, there are bad apples in the mechanic industry. Thanks again for the support of my channel

The irony of a video with "time is money" on the title which doesn't even remotely get to the point for several minutes is not lost on me. :) I have no problem with a long format video if it's long due to useful content. There are occasional useful nuggets in here and I'm not knocking your efforts, but you've got to reduce the filibustering John. Your signal to noise ratio is waaaay off. I'm saying this to be kind, not cruel. Especially as you're advertising a premium not-for-free product too. You'll struggle to incentivise people to part with their money if they just think they're going to get filler and padding.
@electron-john

@benjaminrich9396
@benjaminrich9396 3 ай бұрын
@@electron-john I hear you. But the filibustering and filler to which I refer is not over-explaining the basics. It's just unnecessary chatter. If your concern is less advanced learners - you need LESS of that, not more. Less advanced learners don't have the patience to sift through the filler to find the useful bits. Nor do they even know which buts ARE the useful bits. They're listening at the beginning of a video and every minute it isn't actually teaching them (or anybody else) anything you're just burning up their patience and good will. Even if they do stick with it, you're giving them (not you) the burden of having to work out whether you've said anything of use yet, as, new to the topic, they won't know. If you've some deliberate commercial reason why you want to drag out fewer minutes' worth of material over a longer timebase, then at least fill it with facts and useful content. Not padding. By all means give people at the beginning a quick brief breakdown of what the video will cover, but don't keep constantly telling people what you're going to teach them. just teach them! It doesn't build suspense or interest, it just frustrates. Again, I'm not wishing to be rude. You do (eventually) have some good content. Yes, a LOT of it has been said elsewhere, but that's no reason not to include it. Everybody has to hear these things for the first time somewhere. If you prefer a long format video to shorter punchier videos that's fine. But learners of ALL levels - beginner and advanced - will get bored and exhausted if they have to drum their fingers waiting for your useful content. Especially when they can get it quicker elsewhere. It's a learning curve. My guess is you're accustomed to delivering training in live settings and you have the session booked with no time pressures. But even in those sessions - filler and fluff and a needlessly long intro etc isn't value for money. As I say, what I'm on about is where you're waffling for several minutes. It's not that this is more basic stuff which more advanced learners don't need, it's just fluff. What might help is if you give these talks then get somebody else to edit it. Again, I'm not seeking to be impolite, it's just a crying shame as it detracts from what could otherwise be a good channel. Best of luck
