The UNSC had to start blowing chunks out of the wall their backs were up against. The covenant were exterminating us and the timer for the last living human melted by plasma fire was counting down quick. The poetry of blurring the morality of being human in Ghosts of Onyx definately was illuminating.

I think in warfleet or maybe a halo waypoint, it said attacked human colonies were littered with covenant heavy destroyers, meaning multiple of that type alone were taken down on a routine basis by human defenses.

@@dovahkiin7253 The UNSC had a maintained fleet of 2000 capital ships (cruisers being the vast majority) and possibly as many as 16,000 lighter warships and support ships if the fleet composition was the same as the 5th defense fleet. This would be likely given that frigates did a lot of things from naval combat to fighting pirates and providing ground support. Overall the UNSC likely had to rebuild their fleet 3-4 times, with a total of 8000 capital ships, though probably less frigates comparatively, since those could get away more easily. Requiring an average of 3 ships lost for each kill on a Covenant ship (more for frigates, less for cruisers), the most common being their standard battlecruiser, the UNSC possibly killed more than 5000 capital ships over the course of the 27 year long war before we even count ODPs, sabotage, or boarding action. That said, the Covenant had 20,000 capital ships and were at replacement as well. So it didn't do much, but the UNSC was not exactly lacking in kills. Also, just in 3 actions, the UNSC killed over a thousand warships. The NOVA bomb you mentioned (it killed over 300, and it didn't kill one carrier it left like one or two alive), Preston Cole's last stand (over 200 kills with just over 100 UNSC warships ranging from frigates to cruisers lost), and the destruction of the Prophet of Truth's personal fleet by Spartan Blue Team (500-ish kills and the destruction of the 2nd largest known Covenant battle station). That's probably over 1/20 of the Covenant navy, and two of those happened a few weeks apart.

Both, just Halo Reach the game heavily overrides the book.

Both are canon. Bungie and 343 did a lot of work to patch up the game and the books version of the Battle of Reach and its mostly just timeline tweaks. All the events of the book still happen.

From my understanding, they both are, but the things that contradict give priority to the games canon
