Merry Bookmas! ⛄️ I have read and enjoyed This is How you Lose the Time War! I read and liked Below Zero by Ali Hazelwood this year. I'm cureenrly reading Frosted by the Girl Next Door by Aurora Rey. Which is a new sapphic holiday romance set in my state, where one of them owns a cupcake shop.

Hey Julie! My experience is completely different from yours. I never really liked reading novels without pictures, so I stuck with comic books. Until I moved to light novels with fewer illustrations and, finally, novels in the end. Thank you for these amazing book recs! I'll make sure to check them out soon :) You read sooo much, it's very cool. I'd love to have more free time to read as well. Haven't touched a book in a while. Hey, video idea: how to read whilst having to juggle thousands of work, ahha PS. It would be nice if you invest into a microphone. I love listening to your videos, while I write something and sometimes it's hard to hear. Maybe just a cheap microphone would be fine. Just a tip though, don't feel obligated to buy one!
@thebookishjulie19 сағат бұрын
Hey Alin! I like graphic novels as well, growing up I also read a lot of Naruto. So I get where you're coming from. Honestly, I just ignore all other responsibilities in life 😅 that's the secret to reading so much. But maybe I'll make a video about that! I actually just got a microphone on Black Friday. It hasn't arrived yet, but hopefully the sound quality will be better then :)

I had an older brother that I "borrowed" Stephen King books from. I read "Cujo" at age 7, and "IT" at age 11. I've read all of King's books, and they are hit and miss. I grew up with my grandparents, and my grandmother had books everywhere. So along with stealing my brothers books I read a lot of books targeted at women, like Mary Higgins Clark, Danielle Steele, and Janet Evanovich books, and that's where I learned to brouden my horizons into non‐malecentric books.
@thebookishjulie19 сағат бұрын
It's so funny that you also read IT around the same age. Stephen King really just writes a lot, I could never keep up with that. And stealing books was my favourite thing as a child!

I have been working my way through a list of 50 books that I call "must read before you die". It mostly consests of highly revered classics that I randomly assembled, but the thing it has taught me the most consistently is that an education and continuing our education especially through reading is one of the most important things we can ever do not just for ourselves but those around us.
@thebookishjulie19 сағат бұрын
That sounds like an interesting list! What books stood out to you so far? Education is definitely important, as well as media literacy, that also seems to become increasingly relevant.

Wilder Girls spoilers The first ⅓ I was very interested and invested. But it did unravele quite quickly after that. I agree with everything you said. Some of the criticisms I'd add are 1: how the adults and the government act like they would in a bad childens TV show, for example, most of the food being thrown out bc it as cartoonishly obvious that they tampered with it. 2: the Tox didnt make sense or have a satisfyingly explanation, they said it was a parasite but that didn't explain why both plant and animal characteristics would appear. Also it never expplained why the age mattered and different groups changed differently. 3 like you said the sapphic elements didnt go anywhere, that wpuld have been the only reationship type available so it would have been nor.aluzed and there was no reason Hetti would feel angsty about it. I agree it was too long. I also think it would have been better if it hadn't started over a year into the Tox outbreak and the timeline was much shorter. A different explanation that was alien or supernatural would also have helped. I gave it 2.75☆ which is pretty good for an ambitious first book like this but it could have been better. It wasn't perfect either but "Burn our bodies down" by Rory power was much better
@thebookishjulie19 сағат бұрын
I totally agree that a different explanation and leaning more into the magical/supernatural side would have totally helped. There was definitely potential there

Thank You for this video! The Grace Year has been added to my TBR. I read Vox last year, and 100% agree with your thoughts. A few recs -Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See -I Who have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Hartman -Kindred by Octavia E Butler -The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave -Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan -The Core of the Sun by Johanna Sinisalo -Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

Amazing video! Please keep making this type of content :)) Haven't watched the entire video yet. But I recommend reading Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, if you're looking for some crime thrillers. (psst, it's my favorite book of all time.)

I finally read Wilder Girls, only gave it 2.75☆. I'm going to rewatch your video with it and leave more detailed thoughts there. Providence Girls by Morgan Dante was my best spooky season romance, it's like Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield but I liked Providence Girls more. I'm currently reading The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult which is about an egyptologist who is studying the Egyptian Book of the Dead and has a romance, it's a good pairing for Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. I have "Frsted by te Girl Next Door" by Aurora Ray preordered, which is a spicy sapphic bakery romance that might be wintery too! (Comes out November 12th) I still need to get to more Ashey Poston, I loved The Sven Year Slip. The sweet treat I made was a pudding au chomeur which is a french canadian maple syrup cake, it was very sweet and very good!
@thebookishjulie16 күн бұрын
Yes, Wilder Girls had such a great concept but lacked a bit in execution as far as I can remember. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! I had a big obsession with Egyptian Mythology as a child, maybe it’s worth to read some books about that. I tried reading Lessons in Chemistry but couldn’t really get into it because of the graphic scenes in it, unfortunately I had to dnf it. Your sweet treat sounds great! 😊

I LO♡E Klara and the Sun 5☆, i will warn you it made me cry. I'm currently reading Swordcrossed by Freya Marske it just came out two days ago and is a mm romantasy. Congratulations on completing your thesis🎉🎉🎉

Yes, I know what you mean. Sometimes scenes in books or films are embarrassing and make me really feel embarrassed for the characters. Not a fan of those scenes. Thanks for the recommendations. The only romance novels I've read are the ones written by Sarah Waters. Fingersmith is my favorite. I'm currently reading the biography of Mercedes de Acosta; That Furious Lesbian. I had it sitting on my shelves for a long time. It had a really bad review on goodreads. Halfway through, I don't think the book is that bad, but I think the writer could've done a better job at understanding Mercedes a bit better. There is no doubt she had a complex character. She is mostly known for being a lesbian (someone calls her a professional lesbian) and she wanted so much to be an important writer and she did write a novel that was well received, but all the other attempts were a failure.

Happy pride month 🌈 hope your thesis is going well! I did attempt Love at First Set but dnfed bc Lizzy and James just sitting around watching tv got boring and her mother not taking responsibility for herself got on my nerves. I migjt give it another chance now i know what I'm in for. The next few sapphic books I have on my tbr are -No Mans Chattle by Lee Swanson -D'Vaughn and Kate Plan a Wedding by Chencia C Higgins -On the Same Page by Haley Cass -Matrix by Lauren Groff I read and absolutly loved The Seven Year Slip! And want to check out her new book. Also finished and loved The Bartemaus trilogy, and will get to the fourth one The best sapphic thing i found so far this year was Taken by the Witch Queen by Luna Fury, its very smutty smut but the writing and story are good too. Siren Queen by Ngi Vo is the only Hollywood book I have on my tbr. I did read The Romance Recipe by Ruby Barrett it has a reality show component, good but not a favorite 3.5☆. "Breaking Character" by Lee Winter is one ive heard of.

I read and really enjoyed The Amulet of Samarkand 4.5☆! I'm going to read at least one of the sequels next month. I read A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske, it was just as good as A Restless Truth, and it doesn't really matter what order you read them in. I added The Seven Year Slip to my TBR, one fun thing is it said the man likes lemon pies and lemon is my 2024 food of the year. Here are some non romance recs -Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant -Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro -Pandora's Jar by Natalie Haynes -Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss -The Need by Helen Phillips -Kindred by Octavia E Butler -A Thousand Steps into Night by Traci Chee Two of my other faves so far this year (some romance) - The Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska -The Witche's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

Most 5 stars come out of nowhere for me, so far I've had "A Madness of Sunshine" by Nalini Singh, Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough, Pandora's Jar by Natalie Haynes, Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan, The Core of the Sun by Johanna Sinisalo and All Quiet on the Western Front.
