Supremely brilliant drama for TV from a time when genuine political confrontation still existed and could be experienced on a daily basis. I watched it when first aired (1981), based on the Malcolm Bradbury novel. Howard Kirk represents the very essence of what was under way, from fake uni' Marxism (1972) to die-hard Thatcherism (1979→). Not a single second (even without original sound) to be missed.

The latest Footlighters wearing kefirs. No doubt politically correct, self-righteous and utterly humourless.

The Tory government we had in power in 1982 was even madder. Thatcher thought she was God!

There are few things and people that I envy, but I would have sold my soul to have been part of this wonderful community in such a beautiful and noble place, at a great time in history - the 60s through 80s.

Kind of a snapshot of the 1970s - while Kirk marks down the rather stuffy male student for not incorporating Marxism into his work, by the 1990s the opposite process was more likely in academia. Certainly I knew somebody whose use of Marxist analysis did not go down well with his lecturer.

At least as Antony Sher plays him, Howard Kirk is both rather repulsive and has what I would call a certain charisma.

RIP Richard Baker, David Frost, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller, Jimmy Edwards, Richard Murdoch, Dudley Moore and Mel Smith. Tony Slattery will never work again because of his mental illness. And Chris Serle, the interviewer, died on 16/09/24.
