I accept the sandwich, crisps, biscuit is not a "1stClass meal" but these units do not have the kitchens for a hot meal. Add to this the fact that if you Where to be "given" a meal costing another £5 it would just have to be added to the ticket price! Folk would then complain about that. All that being said the service my adult daughter and I had on or recent trip to Hull and back was 2nd to none. Really great service delivered in such a friendly manner. I will happily do it again when I pop back up north.

It is the longest train journey in the UK, however without really wanting to take anything away from your efforts, you would have been better to have started way up at Thurso (because it's the most Northerly station in the UK mainland). However you would have needed to have conducted your journey from Thurso to Inverness the day before, then travelled by train from Inverness to Aberdeen before taking the journey that you are doing here. That way, you would have travelled from the UK's most Northerly railway station down to the UK's most Southerly railway station in the form of Penzance. As I said, I have no real wish to detract from your efforts. But this was simply a suggestion.

Notes about the food, if you look online at the fresh air stops , check local pizza or sub shops to see if they will deliver to the train, I have done that before in some stops , you call about 1/2 hr before you arrive and they will meet you. If you get others to add to the order that will greatly help them to continue to do that. Also food on diner car prices , breakfast $20, Lunch $25?and Dinner $45, and highly recommend it . Worth at least one or 2 meals .

I hate Flexible Dining. Next time have breakfast at Lou Mitchell 's which is a half a block from Union Station and serves the best breakfast in the world.

5:00 I can give you all you need to know hahaha, there are very few 170s that have got no first class. Scotrail sell first class in the hope that it will be a HST or a 170 with first class which is most standard but obviously there are cases when thats not the case. As for antisocial behaviour, conductors do everything that they can within their power. The problem now is violence and abuse. conductors can't do much when asking someone to leave. All they can realistically do is ask politely and ask firmly otherwise BTP it is which delays a train sometimes for hours because they are not close by to deal with the situation. Another thing is if a conductor was to ask that group, theres one of him many of them so could put himself in danger. just thought I would share some things I have picked up over time. Oh yeah the note about the trolley being steep.... cheaper than costa!

You’ll have a very comfy seat on the 125. Again on a 225. Just a shame that the “HST” trains of today, don’t have seats of comfort, even if you can afford 1st class.

I'll be taking this route on the 12th of january 2025 £32 super off peak and it looks like that the 350s have PTSD (Pantograph Trailer Sstandard Disabled) so i wouldnt sit there as i have PTSD in health reasons so i will be sitting in the declassified first class area on my trips

We paid £30 Liverpool to Manchester first class had people barging through to go to the toilet and they didn't even serve us food tea or a snack. They didn't even treat us well either just asked for a ticket

It depends, a 39 minute journey on a train can take 63 minutes on a car, 24 minutes of it waiting or travelling to the station and only 15 minutes on the train itself. Sometimes it take 4 hours on a train and 3 on a car.

Cheap as chps too as of Dec 2024 you gan go for as littel as £6.40 eacyh way now thats a bargain

Word of warning. Don't use a Pop card on a Go North East bus. Those busses randomly corrupt the cards. They still haven't sorted this issue out for quite some time.
