I was born here in 1940 and we left for Milwaukee in 1945. I visited The Soo in the early 1980's with my 2 youngest sons and we spent a wonderful vacation that included staying with my aunt, visiting my old homestead - now gone - visiting my late father's grave, and traveling thru SSM Ontario before visas were required. It had changed a lot even then, but the Locks still thrilled me! I was home...

Lived in Metro Detroit my whole life, and busted the Soo to see family almost every year. And everytime I've gone, I've almost never came back. If you're a city-type, metro Detroit is your place. But I like slow living, and I like nature. If I live long enough, I know one day I'll take a trip up and finally make the move.

My parents, Red and Laurel O'Neill, built the Dog N Sud Drive-In restaurant and opened in 1965 and the one pictured is not the one that was in the Soo. It always had carhop service even after it was sold to Vic and Sue Trumbley family. Great video with all of the good old Soo.

I *loved* Dog n Suds when I was a kid in the Soo! My friends and I would beg our parents to take us there, and my favorite order was a grape slushy drink and a Coney dog, no onions (I was a kid! I'd order the onions today. 😊) Great memories!

My mom was the waitress at the Flair restaurant from 1969 until 1998 when she retired. Her name was Connie Lyons and the owner was a little old Greek woman whose first name slips my memory but her son's name was Anis and their last name was George.

Thank You for the great video. Even though I don't live in the Soo, I was born there and have many fond memories of that great town. My parents were both from the Soo as well as my grandparents. I visit as often as possible. I hope to be there for Memorial Day weekend.

Big Boy - Clyde's - Woolworth's - This Kincheloe kid will always be a yooper at heart. Sadly, do to my profession, I have to live my life as a Troll from below da bridge... We get up there a lot though. I proposed to the woman who was my high school sweetheart IN the Soo Locks last year, 40 years later than I should have...

Was just there in June. Both sides of my family are from there or the Mac Bridge. Mom and Dad met at Scotts store in the 60's (next to the future Kmart co.), Dad was raised on Shunk Rd. and Mom on Johnston, down from the Valley Camp. I remember as a kid the Snow White Inn, the fountain of many colors and the Red Owl. Some of the buildings are still there. Many have seen better days and the Bowling Alley burned down. But, it still is home to my sister and I. We are planning to come back this year as well. Got to LOVE The Soo!

I know the Red Wings used to hold training camp at the Pullar. Just wondering at 1:22 if that's Gordie Howe, #9, in the photo?

@junkyardjim 4 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, Gordie started wearing 9 in 1947, they started practicing at the Puller in 1948, so ya, thats Gordie alright.

Lots of good photos and memories. It was a good place to grow up. You could go outside in the morning and play all day without parents worrying about your safety. Thank you for sharing these photos with us. I grew up on 14th ave...The same street as the airport. My grandmother and even by Dad( when he was young) worked at Dorothy's Hamburger Place up on the hill. I can remember delivering old newspapers to them to put down on there 'fresh washed floors' and made 25cents for a red wagon load.

Oh, the memories! Thank you for posting this...it brought tears on. My dad built the West Pier Drive-in years ago in the late 50's and then died unexpectedly just a couple of years later in 1960. It was so nice to see pictures of the old restaurant and to remember that it's still a thriving business in the Soo.

Remember it being owned by Gypsy and George in the late 60's and 70's. They were great people and served great food. It still has great food and service and is loved by many.
