S Line has relatively healthy ridership. However the N Line is pretty bad, it only gets like 300 daily riders vs the S with 7,000. I think it’s very possible that the N line will be discontinued once the Link light rail makes it all the way up to Everett. They can use those resources to add more trains to the S line.

I was commuting from south auburn to downtown seattle on a sunday morning which if any of you have tried it it's a horrible experience without a car and weirdly enough a sounder train was heading up that I didn't even know was coming so I missed it, instead I hopped on one of the intercity busses and it was packed with people who were also going to seattle and in turn would likely have taken the train instead, so there is weekend demand people just need to be informed

So now also with the possibility of Kent-Des Moines, the way starter lines would actually work is: 1. Construction delays in part of the line, delay opening by a year. 2. Rest of the line going well? Yes. 3. Can we open the part going well earlier? Yes, we'll open it at a year delay, instead of 2 years. It seems like starter lines function as ways of dressing up even more delays as good news. I hope for future projects, there can be automatic contingency plans to allow starter lines to open *on time* when delays on parts of the line occur.

Federal Way Link Starter Line - (Highline College & Pictogram) by 2024 or 2025? Full Federal Way Link Line (2025-2026)
@realquadmoo
@realquadmoo 9 ай бұрын
They want to get stuff open. East Link Starter Line makes plenty of sense because the tracks over the bridge that connect it to the current system *are not completed and can not run trains over them yet*. The ties that connect the tracks to the bridge (plinths) were screwed up by Kiewit (construction contractor company). Since the line is a decent size, and there is a new Operations & Maintenance Facility for the trains over there, they will be opening up a Starter Line that only runs on that side of the bridge for a while. When the bridge is fixed and the tracks are completed, they'll open up 2 Line as it was originally planned to be. There is not going to be a Federal Way Link Starter Line because it is already connected to the system, so they are not going to operate it separately. The extensions are either going to open on time, early, or late, but they will not be operating separately as a Starter Line.

Design wise, it hits all the points. However, there’s a reason the 2-4 units are doing well (sfr plus adu/dadu or lr townhome mullet plex) Most Developers build to sell. Selling 2-4 units that have to be condos has allowed developers to not pay attention to condo lending requirements or taking the risk of a large common element that puts risk based on the condo act. Keeping the units primarily adjacent townhouse style and keeping the unit count low per project minimizes risk and maximizes finance options for buyers

The new Regional Homeless Authority dallied for almost a year just to hire Mr. Dones which in turn delayed significant homelessness services, generating complaints from many non-profit homeless services providers. Then in this interview as the CEO he wastes more minutes explaining more delays even with a $75m budget citing a mish-mash of bureaucratic jargon and claiming that 20 months will be needed ("as a startup") to get the new Regional Homelessness Authority moving properly toward "permanent housing" or anything really. In the interview a staff member of a local Seattle homeless services provider wanted to know: "when will we see any progress..". Mr. Dones had no answer except to cite even more boilerplate restatement of the problems of homelessness. Several minutes at the very start of the interview is wasted by Mr. Dones explaining his problems with Zoom services billing and some other incoherent issues. He gives his interview at what seems to be (in the background) a retail clothing store, with audio that is out of sync with the video. So much for his respecting the interview process with The Urbanist. Let me boil down the interview from my perspective as a volunteer advocate for homeless services in Seattle since the early 1980's (Downtown Human Services Council) and past board member of the Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project (newspaper): he is a fast talking self promoting salesman that states the obvious in as complicated and jargon filled way possible. Listen closely for yourself - he restates problems full of anecdotes but offers nothing of value in the telling. To me he is a fraud with a large budget that will waste money intended to help people suffering from homelessness. This happened under CEHKC and it's empty 10-year plan to end homelessness, it's successor org All Home and now the new Regional Homeless Authority. Interviewer was too PC to pushback against Mr. Dones empty rhetoric. Very sad.... tragic really.

Unless the Sounder is getting all-day frequent service (10-30 minute bidirectional headways), the 1, 2, and 3 lines have some of the dumbest alignments possible. Why is there a bunch of spaghetti that forces a transfer downtown if you want to get from Everett to Tacoma? Why are lines not in as straight an orientation as possible? More than anything, Seattle needs a solid transit spine that runs north to south, and another that runs East to West. This spaghetti makes no sense and it forces transfers we're they're not needed. Maybe having a twisting layout would make sense in a city that sprawls in all directions, but Seattle sprawls linearly - it should have a spine.
@qlrxj
@qlrxj 2 жыл бұрын
Looks like it would only require one transfer anyway? But the silliest part seems to be the 2 line where getting from one end to the other looks like a pain. It reminds me of the L system in chicago where nearly every line converges in the loop in downtown for transfers.

@RoboJules
@RoboJules 2 жыл бұрын
@@godhimself1128 Yeah, which is why it would be a great idea to electrify it, create more grade separations, and increase both speed and frequency. I'd love an 80mph top speed with 15 minute frequencies, longer station spacing (5-10 miles), and connections with LRT, BRT, and Streetcar. Combined with a great bus network and a metro quality light rail system, Greater Seattle would have the best transit system in Western NA - even better than Vancouver or San Francisco. Because cities on the West Coast are linear sprawls of distant urban centers, Regional Rail is key to the future growth of our transit systems. Regional Rail can become the true spine that ties a city's transit together.

Honestly it’s not too bad. I’d would kill for multiple lines to be in the works. San Francisco has a pretty bad housing problem too and there are 0 stations under construction since they completed the central subway last year. All we have planned is possibly an extension of the new line by a stop or two but I bet NIMBY’s will sue and delay that project once again…
@andrewswanson4819
@andrewswanson4819 Жыл бұрын
My theory is while Seattle is politically liberal by US standards, it's just another case of the American "system" favoring car-based development in general (look at suburbs like Sammamish, Maple Valley, Lake Stevens) combined with some NIMBYism (because the long term value and immediate need for better regional transit doesn't compute for them), so we end up with delays and sometimes half-assed solutions that sometimes actually end up working really well (transit tunnel I see you)

@@andrewswanson4819it’s exactly that. Just look at the comment sections of news videos about the 2Line, half of it is Eastsiders doomposting that it’s going to carry a flood of homeless people across the lake and into Redmond and Bellevue and that somehow druggies are going to be the only users, or the battles advocates have to fight to get ST to keep stations in the actually useful locations that everyone *already voted for*. I’m not strawmanning btw, these are near verbatim things that real people say. There’s a good chunk of residents in King County only capable of viewing things through the lens of how much they can resell their homes for, and it’s a miracle that we even have county-wide rapid bus transit in spite of these naysayers

On daily trips between Seattle and Bothell I spend 40% the time of the trip stopped or accelerating from stoplights. During that 40% of the time of the trip I average 6 MPG and produce @ 80% of my emissions. The number one job of the department of transportation should be to facilitate and even ensure efficient transport. That means develop a traffic counting and sensing system that can keep it moving. What we have instead is wasted time, wasted health, congestion, damage to the environment and frustrated commuters. It seems like bureaucrats and ceo's want to melt as many glaciers as possible. It seems clear that we could eliminate half of the carbon emissions if we had proper intersections and acceleration controls in place. I hear the monster muscle cars and trucks echo for a mile here many times a day, frustration evident in all the unnecessary waiting. We do not have a transport system deserving of any praise or excuses. We gather as many cars together in a mass at an intersection only to stop and huddle them again 1/4 mile later. Apparently what we need is a transportation Czar who will take the simple steps necessary and understands the destruction and damage being done by what we have now.

We need community connectivity and jobs AND emissions reductions within this decade. UHSGT will not achieve those objectives, whereas implementing the Amtrak Cascades Long Range Plan will. Great to plant the flag for UHSGT but we must not skip the step of utilizing our practical investments - the blueprint and infrastructure that we already have - and making the existing system faster, frequent, reliable. Neither Sec. Millar nor me nor anyone our age will ride the bullet train until we're like 95 years old. We need emissions reductions and economic recovery now, not 30 years from now.
