Good fight, too bad Cosell was announcing, He was awful, never shut up. I could not even hear the weights during the introductions, he keeps talking right though them.

By the modern scoring system I have this fight 113-112 for Patterson 113-113 is also a very reasonable score. Patterson outboxed Quarry by using that right lead and transitioning to leading exchanges from the outside. Quarry also began gassing out after the 7th which made it safer for Floyd to exchange with him in the pocket. Those 2 knockdowns in the 2nd and 4th are what "won" Quarry this fight.

Patterson was a totally different class to the top British heavyweights around in that period. Brian London got the same treatment.

Didn't see this as a Patterson win. Certainly not a unanimous one. It smacked of a hometown/sentimental decision for Floyd. I think you could argue that Oscar sneaked it through his more consistent aggressive intent, while Floyd spent a lot of time simply bouncing up and down out of range. However an overall fairer decision would have been a draw

This is Sonny somewhere near his best 58-61, he looks a lot slicker and leaner than when he fought Clay 5-6 years later, even though the weights appeared similar, he didn't quite get the K O, but have read he often carried opponents extra rounds, so wouldn't put other boxers off facing him?

Shortly after Patterson's death, I was listening to a world title fight on the radio (I can't even remember who was fighting). Before the fight the ring announcer called for 10 seconds' silence in memory of Patterson, while the ring bell was rung 10 times. Of course some drunken motormouths in the audience couldn't keep quiet, and continued to mouth off during the 10 seconds. It was most disrespectful to a great champion and I was disgusted.

Liston was probably at his peak in 1958 and by the time he threw the second Ali fight, he was on a downslide. I can't see a peak motivated Liston getting stopped by Ali

Floyd Patterson was my boyhood hero. I would read the sports page report on his fights, since tv was in its infancy in the 1950's, I did not get to view Patterson's fights. To view Patterson throwing combinations with the hand speed not ever matched in heavyweight history. In this fight Brian London was challenging Floyd for his Title as Champ. Brian was older than Floyd by several years. He had already been the Heavyweight Champion of Britain before losing it to Henry Cooper by decision. I don't know how many viewers of this 1959 fight between Patterson and London could appreciate the rugged toughness of Brian London in his fight with Patterson. Floyd was at the tip-top of his game! His punching combination speed was already legendary when he fought Brian London. Brian put up a fight and was gradually worn down until the 11th round when Floyd knocked out Brian. Many viewers of boxing overlook the toughness that is demanded of a fighter to keep fighting even though he knows his efforts will not be enough to win. That's tough! That was Brian London! Always came to the fight in shape, and fit to a T. I followed Brian's career as much as local tv broadcasting would permit. I read the Ring Magazine cover to cover trying to keep up with the latest fight reports but in those days nothing came easy. I also got the Ring's competition in boxing reporting, this was "Boxing Illustrated". They had the official weight class rankings, along with the non-official top 50 fighters in all weight classes. I loved this as those ratings in both magazines was important in getting to know the fighters of that time period (1959). May Brian and Floyd both "Rest In Peace". Both had many fans following them and cheering for them in their fights.

Floyd Patterson made a successful first defence of his world heavyweight title at the Polo Grounds on 29th July in 1957 when he stopped Tommy 'Hurricane' Jackson in the tenth round. Referee Ruby Goldstein had seen quite enough of Jackson absorbing, in round after round, punches that no man should be asked to endure. For all Jackson's vaunted stamina, and it is almost beyond belief, the cumulative effect of the head beating he suffered must, in the end, be of lasting damage. Jackson was hospitalised five hours after the fight with a bruised kidney. Jackson, who had blood in his urine, remained under observation for several days. Patterson visited Jackson in the hospital the day after the fight. Cus D'Amato, Patterson's manager, expressed full satisfaction with Patterson's performance, though he seemed puzzled when Goldstein stopped the fight. So did Patterson. Both wanted a clear KO. "He was extraordinary," D'Amato said of Jackson. "No one could take the punches he took." "Jackson kept telling me in the clinches to come out and fight. He called me a bum. That's a funny way to describe a man who's winning the fight," Patterson said after the fight.

When this fight took place in 1972, I was but 21-years old. I had become a big Patterson fan after his tremendous comeback win to regain his Title against Johannson. So did a lot of my boxing friends become fans of Floyd Patterson, not only his comeback win, but the way he conducted himself inside and outside the ring. We mourned after his two losses to Liston, then Floyd comes back yet again with big wins over good fighters, a young George Chuvalo being one of those wins. Then his loss to Ali, really turned many of us against Ali, for his despicable treatment of Floyd before the fight and during the fight. His lack of respect for the former champion was offensive to many boxing fans! Patterson had injured his back during this fight, severely, but continued on, doing the best he could under the circumstances. Floyd was not done yet with boxing. His hand speed had not slackened any, he could still throne those 3-punch combos with lightening speed. Floyd Patterson was a positive influence for young men entering into the boxing world. He never belittled an opponent. before, during, or after the fight was over. He was a quiet and reserved man. He was the kind of man that a father would want his son to grow up and be like. In short, Floyd was a gentleman inside and outside the ring. Patterson was one of several heavyweights that were involved in a boxing tournament to determine the new Champ. Ali had been stripped of his Title for his "refusal" to answer his countries call for duty (Draft). Floyd fought Jerry Quarry two different times in this Boxing Tournament. I saw both fights, and many boxing fans felt Floyd got robbed in the first fight that led to the second fight with Quarry. For myself, and others, I've spoken with about these two fights with Quarry, we thought that Floyd won the first fight that was ruled a draw and the same felt the same way in fight two. Floyd was "robbed" in both fights! A short while later, Floyd would fight the winner of the Boxing Tournament, Jimmy Ellis. Once again "ring robbery" reared its ugly head. Floyd broke the Champ's nose in the first round, dropped him in round 14, only to have a"clear cut" knock down ruled a slip. A referee, Harold Valan, that must have been drunk, crazy, or watching another fight to come up with his 9/6 win for Jimmy Ellis. Floyd was, in reality, a 3-time Heavyweight Champion, another ring robbery against Patterson. Floyd would have several fights "stolen" from him by bad or blind judges! The Joey Maxim fight before Pattersons wins the Title, his two-fights with Quarry being highway robbery cases, and this fight with Jimmy Ellis where the attending fans would scream, shout, and stomp this terrible call by referee Harold Valan. Yeah, I was and still am, a Floyd Patterson fan even after he lost his title. We, his fans, would cheer his wins, and mourn his few losing efforts. His conduct as a man and Heavyweight Champ was second to none! That's why he was loved and cheered for!

@@johnsewell6593 Thank you for the kind words sir. The history of boxing has always been a fascinating subject for myself. I'm in my 70's now and the boys in the neighborhood would gather on Saturday when school was out and we trained (box). At that time Floyd Patterson was my boyhood hero. His fight with George Chuvalo made the "Fight of the Year" with Ring Magazine. Another fighter from that time period I enjoyed watching when available was Karl Mildenberger, the European Heavyweight Champion. Karl was a southpaw. but unlike British heavyweight Jack Bodell, Karl was a very smooth and talented fighter. Anyway Mr. John, thank you again and post me again sometime.

@@davidabney7700 And thank- you David. The "sweet science" will always be a fabulous topic for discussion as well as one for nostalgic thoughts of days gone by. A totally off the wall thing that just occured to me and maybe you've seen it. I was watching the Twilight Zone yesterday. The episode was entitled " Steel". Steel was portrayed by Lee Marvin ( a favorite of mine), anyways the plot was - it took place in the future ( it was produced in 1961)....the future wss supposedly 1974 - because of people getting hurt and the crooked deals involved - BOXING was BANNED outright. They used robots to fight and only robots were permitted to get in the ring. It was really thought provoking and very interestimg....I highly recommend it. It was written by Rod Serling who wrote "Requium for a Heavyweightl ". I've always loved that boxing movie also....Long may you run my friend !! JRS.

@@johnsewell6593 John, sorry about my delay in responding, had a lot of activity I had to deal with and my elderly mind failed me somewhat, just like "Battling Maxel" in the Twilight Zone episode steel. Funny, that one episode of TZ has stayed with me all these years. When it first aired in the early 60's I was a young man, and I remember hoping that constantly complaining mechanic that Lee Marvin had with him, would fix Battling Maxel up enough to fight. Great viewing! My favorite Patterson fight was one that he lost. He fought reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis. Floyd broke the nose of Ellis in round 1, and from that point forward Floyd manhandled Ellis in various rounds, going into the 15th.Floyd's hand speed that night was amazing! Many of the fight fans viewing the fight felt like Floyd won, I certainly thought that. The booing that started as soon as the announcer called out that Jimmy won. Floyd, being the gentleman he had been all of his fight career, accepted this flawed verdict with the kind of dignity rarely seen. The decision was done by the referee (Alan) who was the sole judge. He had Floyd losing by a margin that was not seen by the fans. Take care sir and thank you for your response.

When I was a kid , Patterson was recognized as a great boxer , with good punching power and speed . But he was almost universally described as having a “ glass jaw”. What went unnoticed was that he was really just a small light heavyweight. Lighter men can sometimes hit as hard or even harder than bigger opponents. However, they cannot take a punch as well.
