Wow, great gameplay that isn't tas perfection! I'm impressed! I never got very far in this game as a kid, although i remember the barrel waterfall, I didn't figure out most of the items. Btw game really feels a bit cheap looking back, and the ending is awful, even for a NES game.

As kid I've got very close the the end. I only screwed it up because I put the bean on the bean table, rather than the heap of dirt it points to and I've never figured that out before I had to give the cartridge back.

Mano , me ajuda aí.. Não estou conseguindo passar pelo Robot Boss do LEVEL 16. Pois quando vou trocando os mísseis, não aparece a opção do Guided Missile pra mim , logo não consigo usar ele pra destruir o Robot Boss. Como resolvo isso ?

Does this work on Emerald? Edit: After some research I can say that it does, just swap flamethrower for shock wave Edit 2: Since the champion in Emerald is now Wallace, the new 2 pokemon that Exploud has no super effective moves against are Sableye and Ludicolo

Fine gameplay Calmarius, shooting from cover, collecting weapons & energy, always on the move. This was one of my favorite levels in the '90's on my 486-Dx2, haha! Thanks for uploading, brought back many good memories! 👍

Even with my improved flying skills using my G13 keypad I don't think I could pull this off. Configured the thumbstick for frd/rev thrust and left/right slide and the two buttons are up and down slide.

I simply used the good old W-A-S-D and mouse aim. R-F for up-down and alt+left control for banking. Ctrl shots flares, left shift brings up the map. So all 5 fingers of the left hand is working.

@@Calmarius Nice 👍 I've never had the dexterity for WASD, heck I cent even type using the home row positions. Fortunately over the years I've found ways around it with the programmable keys of my G13 and G15 keyboard etc.

I remember finding sealed copies of this and D2, the floppy versions, for like 99 cents in the cutout bins in the mall, around 2000 or so. Wish I'd grabbed one or two of em, they have made nice decorations or fetch some money on Ebay (maybe).

The third secret level is accessible from this level (near the red key). There's a fair number of extra missiles there, including Mega; plus, there are multiple invulnerability powerups there. I'm not entirely sure if going there for more secondary weapons is viable in practice, largely because of the (endlessly respawning?) Thief bot(s).

I've kind of devised an alternate method of pseudo-cold-starting the secret levels in D1 and possibly D3. It starts with playing the levels leading to them normally (cold start optional, but faster) but with some crucial strategy changes near the end: 1) When attacking the reactor, get your ship destroyed BEFORE triggering the self-destruct sequence (preferably as far away from the reactor room entrance as possible, so as to avoid picking primary weapons back up). 2) Make your way back to the reactor, finish it off, and proceed to the secret exit. If you find any previously uncollected secondary weapons, they can help against the reactor and surrounding bots. 3) Before exiting, make sure that your shields and energy are ≤ 100 (as they will be restored to 100 at the start of the next level), you have no primary weapons besides the level 1 lasers, and no secondary weapons besides concussion missiles. The amount of these you have should the *exact* same as what you (re)spawned in with. 4) OPTIONAL: If you want to have the life counter at exactly 2 at the start of the secret level, then lose all but one or two of them before taking the secret exit. Be cautious of how many points you earn in the level, especially on Hotshot or higher, as you will gain a substantial percentage-based bonus added to your level score. These values appear to be +50% on Hotshot, +100% on Ace, and +150% on Insane (the latter two percentages appear to be reduced to 75% and 100%, respectively, in D2). An extra life is automatically earned at every interval of 50,000 points reached, including such score intervals resulting from post-level bonuses. As such, you can exit with 2 lives on the counter if your bonus total is not enough to bring your total score above a 50k interval, 1 life if it passes 1 interval, and 0 lives if it passes 2 intervals. Again, this part is completely optional, but I enjoyed testing out the skill bonuses and wanted to share this somewhere. 5) If getting to the secret level like this proves to be a challenge for you (particularly on Insane), I recommend that you save your game either right at the beginning of said level, or right in front of the secret exit if your source port disables saving within the secret levels (I think I've heard that D2X-XL does this, but I'm not sure). This weird strategy is mostly irrelevant for Descent 2 for several reasons. First, you can enter and leave secret levels at any time until either they're destroyed, or the levels that lead to them are. In fact, you can integrate the secret levels into your cold-start strategies. If you really want to pseudo-cold-start the secret levels, then most primary weapons (lasers excluded) and all secondary ones can be dropped, so the only thing you need to avoid in this case would be laser upgrades.
