My suggestion, for all writers, is to never, ever base your characters on people you know. Never. If you do, and, if or when it comes out that you have, people are judgmental over it. People almost always assume the similarities outweigh the differences, even if the opposite is true. People are complex. But characters in novels have to be as simple as possible without making them bots performing an act. Especially when it comes to motivations, the simpler the better. Readers often read stereotypes into your characters anyway, so use that and play up to your strengths as a simpler writer if you can. Never over-complicate things without having explained in detail why they work, because let's face it; if you don't do your homework on your complex characters, your readers will see it and know it for what it is: you bit off more than you could chew.
