Be careful in pulling the old tacks as you may break some of the tines. If that happens, all isn't lost. If a tack head no longer has a tine, simply apply some glue to the tack head rim and press in place. Best tool to use is a tack puller. You can find them online or at an upholstery supply store.

what kind of thread do you guys use? also thickness and color. thank you!!
@KevinGillanАй бұрын
We typically use Gutermann Extra Strong Thread which is a high tensile strength nylon thread. Thread thickness varies based on what the original manufacturer used, we match that. In most cases the color of the thread doesn't matter as when we color the leather, the thread gets colored too. If the client wants an off-color thread (thread not same color as leather) then we try as best possible to find a matching Gutermann thread. To us, strength of the thread is more important than color.

@@KevinGillan im trying to order some thread for a repair but im not certain on thickness. what is a average thickness yall have used in the past? thanks for responding
@KevinGillanАй бұрын
@@christiannn94 The tensile strength is more important to us than the thickness. Thickness of thread, like leather, is measured by its weight for a fixed dimension. In the case of thread its a fixed length, in leather it's the weight of one square foot. This web site gives various ratings of thread based on the material (ie. nylon, polyester, cotton, etc.). You might find some useful info here: www.sailrite.com/Selecting-the-Right-Thread-Size

What is the color of the basecoat you are using?
@KevinGillan2 ай бұрын
We always custom match the color of the leather by eye creating a color that is specific to the piece. It has to match, not just be close. It is one of the challenges in leather repair however through repetition you get better at it. in this case, because it was a base and print (mottled color) there were two color matches required. One for the base coat and the other for the print coat

Beautiful work. I have a Wassily chair with one side of the leg frame tilted in. I assume I have to take the entire thing apart? Any suggestions?
@KevinGillan2 ай бұрын
Yes, you'll have to disassemble the frame. it's not that difficult tho take the chair apart. you'll need a 5 mm and 3 mm allen wrenches. the set screws on the bottom are the 3 mm. The trick here is you turn those set screws IN to pass the profile of the metal, then you can separate the front from the back. Do not try to take them out. You'll break it if you try hard enough
@Law92232 ай бұрын
I would be concerned about the thread that's already loose and cut in the seams, why wouldn't you knot that so it doesn't come apart more? And secure from unraveling? Just curious.. thanks!
@KevinGillan2 ай бұрын
You're right to be concerned. We always tie it off with a triple knot. It may not have been shown but that is our standard practice.

Thank you Kevin. Can you recommend a colleague in Austin Texas to repair our 12 year old Natuzzi? I think the deck removal and web replacement is beyond me.
@itsthemetho3 ай бұрын
It looks fine and maybe it was the only way, but that looked like dyed leather. Your solution is a painted finish. I wonder if you couldn't have stuck with an alcohol based dye solution.
@KevinGillan3 ай бұрын
@@itsthemetho this piece had a “base and print” pigmented finish from the factory. Because it wasn’t raw leather, the dye solution wouldn’t penetrate. Furthermore, even if it were an aniline piece, dyes lack covering power as their molecular construct is very small so the outcome tends to be blotchy. Finally, you run the risk of the dye transferring on to people’s clothing.

Hi Kevin, I just got my hands on a stunning Stendig navy suede chair/ottoman that needs a little cleaning. Would you use these same cleaning steps even if it s a textured suede? I love your videos! Thank you
@KevinGillan3 ай бұрын
Yes, this cleaning strategy applies to both nubuck and suede. - Stendig is a great piece. Be gentle is sanding and use a vacuum cleaner with a clean head to remove the leather "dust" the cleaning process will create.

I had a leather sofa that is over 20 years old made by mattress company. It’s mid grade leather, no sag springs, and framed in pine and OSB or plywood. Not the best build quality but still pretty solid. Unfortunately it got tossed out even though it only needed new foam for the seat cushions. I’ll give Natuzzi a hard pass and get a quality Sofa like a Leather sofa co. Sofa, or another couch made with high quality materials that would outlive me.

I just watched this 12 years later..... My wife and i just pulled all the cushion covers off our outdoor furniture to wash them. The whole time she was saying we'll never get these covers back on. At dinner, i said they must make a bag we could put them in and suck the down with our shop vac......( like those bags people use for packing luggage). Then i thought, how do we get the bag back out??? Then 2:35 i told her, I'm going on you tube..... boom!!! WTH. Sacrificial bag!!! Just rip it out!

The unfinished undyed underside how do we clean that.
@KevinGillan8 ай бұрын
The underside of leather is suede. Suede CANNOT be cleaned with ANY liquid. Doing so risks permanently damaging the leather. Suede can be cleaned using an abrasion method following the same procedure used in cleaning Nubuck. Watch this video to learn how. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYTIpqGqhZmbeLc

What grit are you using?
@KevinGillan8 ай бұрын
I use a variety of grits based on the delicacy of the leather and depth of the stain. I prefer to us 3M soft-back sanding pads. - The three grits i commonly use are super fine, ultra fine and micro fine. This would translate roughly to 320, 400 and 600 grit on wet/dry sandpaper.

Hi Kevin, your video was very informative and certainly answers some questions to the sagging in our sofa's. We bought Natuzzi's blue velvet sofa and two armchairs from their editions collection in 2017, fast forward to 2024 and the sofa is sagging. We really feel that we are sitting an inch or so lower than when we got it and you have to climb out of the sofa. The webbing was repaired a few years ago after it dislodged but Natuzzi and I suspect it's the webbing that has gone again. I'm not convinced there much craftsmanship in the sofa and wouldn't buy again. Thanks for the video and salutations from the UK!!

The hole left by the nail can easily be repaired with our leather repair compound, Soft Fill. However, the impression made by the rim of the nailhead in the leather will be permanent as the leather has effectively been embossed.
