It's the toughest I've been on! The hills on Twyn Rivers and Bluffer's Park are pretty bad, but I can at least make it up both without taking any breaks. The Doris McCarthy hill is just loose gravel - it's so hard to get any traction on that. And if you are in a stopped position, getting any momentum is crazy tough.

What is your preferred road to cross the 401? I avoid Kennedy even in my car so on my bike I tend to go up Birtchmount
@scarboroughcyclist10 ай бұрын
Kennedy was literally the last 401 crossing that I had yet to complete. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I did this ride on a weekend morning, so it was okay. Birchmount is my favourite 401 crossing (at least in western Scarborough - Conlins Rd. is my favourite in the east). Midland would be right up there too, but that crossing has been under construction for a long time, and lighting through the underpass is poor.
@BGRANT777X10 ай бұрын
@@scarboroughcyclist that is funny Collins would be my second choice but I'm rarely near it. Its kinda crazy that along the entire 401 in the city I can only think of 2 places to cross while not on a road by North York hospital and by the Humber around Weston, are there any more?
@scarboroughcyclist10 ай бұрын
@@BGRANT777X None in the east end of Toronto, anyway. You kind of have to pick your poison and go on-road - some options are better than others (Progress and Meadowvale aren't bad options, given the relative lack of traffic). It would be great if there were a couple of bike path crossings in Scarborough, but I doubt this has been given much thought.
@kevininthenorth557511 ай бұрын
They need to add bike lanes here, there's so much green space on both sides
@scarboroughcyclist11 ай бұрын
Totally agreed - there is a ton of room for bike lanes. Much of the road is in rough shape, so hopefully bike lanes are added when resurfacing takes place. It would make sense since there are already bike lanes east of Morningside.
@suggame978211 ай бұрын
Can cyclists ride on a pavement? The road looks too dangerous with fast cars and no bike lanes.
@scarboroughcyclist11 ай бұрын
It isn't ideal for cycling, but there are worse roads. The stretch from Kingston to Meadowvale has little traffic, so it doesn't feel too tough. The stretch from Morningside to Orton Park is hilly, but the white curb line creates the feel of a bike lane, even if it isn't a real one. The bike lanes between Orton Park and (almost) Markham Rd. are pretty good. West of Markham can feel intimidating, due to the traffic. For what it's worth, this isn't a ride I would typically do for leisure - I mainly wanted to capture footage, so that my viewers could enjoy this stretch on a stationary bike or trainer without having to bike on Ellesmere :). I captured this footage on a Sunday morning to make things as easy as possible for me. If I was biking later in the day or on a weekday, I would probably take a route like the Meadoway across.
@BGRANT777X11 ай бұрын
I live on Ellsemere and ride a bike but didn't know the trail went all the way to Markham. I turn off into the hydro fields all the time but unless that trail is going to connect to something new I don't think that will change.
@scarboroughcyclist11 ай бұрын
The addition to almost Markham Rd. is relatively new. I hope there are plans to extend it, because it ends in an awkward spot - right at the entrance/exit of an apartment building. It would take some work to get this trail through the Markham/Ellesmere intersection, which already has a lot going on.

Its amazing to see what there doing with the portlands its gonna be like a mini city if they weren't building condos there portland would be even more beautiful when its done unfortunately we have to look at eye sores to see beauty 😂
@scarboroughcyclist Жыл бұрын
I'm mixed about the development. On the one hand, the area will be much more visually appealing when the construction is complete, and it will be a very bike-friendly area. On the other hand, I'm not that enthusiastic about many condos going up, but beyond that it will be a busy environment. Biking in the Port Lands (pre-construction, anyway) had its own quiet appeal, as there was never a lot of traffic, and there was plenty of space for cyclists. It was an underappreciated area where one could enjoy a little more open space, while still being close to downtown.

I wish that squirrel made it across (I was urging it on), but it hesitated and was struck by a car 😢. I didn't see if it was just a glancing blow or not, but I would like to think that the squirrel could have survived the incident (this is probably wishful thinking). That subdivision is springing up quickly. That part of Markham really is a boom town. Overall Denison was a decent road to bike on. The western stretch felt pretty industrial, but the more residential eastern stretch was quite pleasant.
