For the Christian being single for any reason means that celibacy is mandatory as long as you are unmarried. It's difficult but necessary if I am to be faithful to the Holy Scripture.

One area that I have been working on lately is listening. A coworker pointed out that, when someone is sharing a prayer request at work, I chime in with my own similar story. She told me simply to listen ... express sympathy / empathy. Don't step on them or wait for my next chance to jump in with my thoughts. Being aware of this is helping me to choose words more carefully by "subtraction." I always tell students and my buddies: If you want more friends, become a good listener. The folks around us are dying for someone to care enough to notice them and to listen to them. This shows that they matter, that they are important. I am trying to listen the way Jesus did and does.
