Why do you import? Because a product is unavailable or more expensive in the home market. Slapping on tariffs restricts consumer choice and makes things more expensive. Making things more expensive is inflationary. Number one rule of economics is to control inflation. Good luck with that.

The fact that Harris and the Dems refused to do any of those things - and CONTINUE TO AVOID doing them after the loss is a question these 2 need to explore. I think it's a combination of several factors: 1. Dems believe this Woke nonsense because they live in a powerful DEI bubble that makes sure any potential criticisms are shouted down as bigotry. 2. The party lives in fear of its fringe in the same way Republicans feared MAGA and so now the party - like the Republicans - IS just a bunch of fringe zealots and people too scared to say anything.

Always fun, Matalin is. In 1997, when the Matalin-Carvile Road Show was on its way to Pittburgh, I got MM and Carville to do dueling interviews for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In their Q&As I asked each of them the same questions. One that I asked MM was: "How can you live with someone as partisan as you, or even more so?" A: I'm more partisan than he. I adhere to more tenets of conservatism-slash-libertarianism than he does of strict liberalism. He's more of a traditional values guy and an economic liberal. So on good days we can discuss it. On bad days we can't. We worked in politics 20 years before we met each other. It's not like we never had to talk to people from the other side, so you know how to do it. We also have a life. We have a kid and a kid on the way. We have 22 cows. We've got two dogs. We have a working farm. We work hard during the day. The answer cannot be, 'don't use tech', and also cannot be 'fully succumb to your every tech / dopamine desire.' Is it just the circumstance that I live in the HARDEST time to be a human? Wonderful conversation. The musical themes I hear beneath your words, gents, is what American cultural philosopher Albert Murray called "Omni-American." Our nation's motto sums it up beautifully: E Pluribus Unum, "Out of Many, One." The many are the bountiful tributaries of peoples who comprise our pluralistic mosaic and melting pot. The one is the superordinate American-ness to which we aspire grounded in what Ralph Ellison called our sacred founding documents. Another melody line that I hear implied in your conversation, Andrew and Reihan, is what philosophers Anthony Appiah and Danielle Allen called "rooted cosmopolitanism." Omni-Americans have the capacity to be grounded in particular identities--ethnic, religious, political--while also being citizens of the world as it were, embracing the universal through the particular, as well as the global and local. Thanks for playing the chords that need to be heard in these times of confusion and deep polarization. Greg Thomas, Co-Director The Omni-American Future Project

@@dlmcnamara The “trigger” authority-called the “Border Emergency Authority”-would enable the administration to summarily deport migrants who enter between ports of entry without permitting them to apply for asylum. The new emergency authority could be activated if border “encounters” reach a daily average of 4,000 over a period of seven days and would become mandatory once border encounters reach over 5,000 over a period of seven days or 8,500 over a single calendar day. So it's not enforced until 5,000/day come in. So 4,999 can enter legally a day without being triggered. 4,999 x 365 = 1,820,000 allowed to enter per year This doesn't even count illegal crossings, just those that the border patrol encounter This bill was a scam and we all know.

You gotta remember that it was the Biden administration’s policies that allowed the largest amount of illegal immigrants to enter the country ever and an election year attempt to try to and get votes doesn’t change which party’s actions are really responsible for exacerbating the crisis to unheard of heights. I - and most Americans - find liberal attempts to try and shift the blame onto Trump laughable. It’s like the Republicans crafting an environmental protection bill and their supporters blaming Dems for nixing it. Surely there are reasons worth considering and exploring, otherwise, from whence her reticence? Americans have asked this ages, i.e., why won't the candidates simply declare they understand the complexities of issues and acknowledge the sane middle ground? It would be most productive to take a look at why they don't say these things even in the run-up to an election.
