I was a Navy Corpsman and had this duty at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and was called upon twice to make notifications. On the first, we found that the family had moved out of state already. The second, the family already knew. I was also in charge of the funeral detail and had to present the flag to the next of kin on more than one occasion. It's never easy.

I remember playing in the back yard my brother and I being called into the house, I remember walking through the house into the living room and seeing my dad, mom and sister in tears and groaning in pain. The two navy officers with the hats at their sides. My dad looks at me and says “ your older brother beau has been killed. The room went black and I fell to the floor in shock. As we all sat in the living room as a family calling our other family members to notify them of our loss. I will never forget the screams of my sisters and the yelling from my brothers. Truly a day that I will never be able to forget. But I am thankful for the sacrifices of the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Hollywood please get it right. That “captain” doesn’t know how to wear his cover. And never touch the brim. Honor the Corps by just getting it right.

My brother called me to say he will be landing soon and to not say anything to anyone. He told me he would go to my mothers first and to go visit her. He then showed up with his 2 friends all in dress. He stayed in the car and his friends came to the door first. She saw them walk by the window and was confused and went tl the door. When she opened and they asked her who she was... She went absolutely hysterical... before they could finish it was actually fucking awful. My brother then popped out with open arms and she ran to him... She was swearing at him. Slapped him a few times and embraced him. Needless to say... i guess they thought it would be funny... but jesus christ that was dark.

This short film was appropriate in its form. It was exemplary in its respectful distancing, detachment , yet, paying the correct amount of honour and glory to a servant of ones country! There was a touch of angelic beauty in its formality.

julia moore practically lived in wash dc after the battle of the ia drang in 1964 . she lobbied for a formal notification system of fallen soldiers. in case you are wondering lt c hal moore fought the battle of ia drang (we were soldiers). notifications came by way of whoever had a running car such as delievery drivers and taxis...even pizza drivers were used when the war turned bad! sad! she lobbied for the remainder of her life! she did not recieve a notification but helped delievered many by hand! in this case a civil social worker should have been brought for emotional statbilizing... this notification is the most stressing a human being can go through. the worst part he was scheduled to come home meaning "he was short"! congrads to the acting it was spectacular and nothing less!

In 2004, I had survived my tour in Iraq and had been home for a month. A home came up for sale in my neighborhood and I was the first person there that morning to see the home. I arrived early, at 6 am before reporting to duty. I was in battle dress uniform. I waited for the home owner to come outside to get his newspaper before I got out of my car. When he saw me, he was alarmed. I quickly explained that I was there to see the home. He was relieved as his brother was serving in Iraq and that this was not a next of kin notification. We were always very careful off base when in uniform, especially when wearing class Bs or class As.

Watching this makes me disappointed in our political and senior military leadership over the last 22 years. All of the sacrifice and resources squandered by the Military Industrial Complex in two wars. I have no sympathy for what happens to those cowards that squandered it all, which is why I relish the fact that military recruiting is so difficult nowadays. Let the branches be starved of new recruits and barely function as intended by these elite who don't sacrifice anything, only squander. May God bless these deceased service members and their Gold Star families.

It was a Sargent, his friend, that came to the door. I saw my sister crying already. I looked at her and then him, and before I could say anything, he uttered those words... "It is with deep regret and great sadness that I must inform you of the death of your father. 1st Sargent Richard E. ......" I was 10 at the time. Almost 50 years ago, and I still grieve.

I once wrote a screenplay where a cop goes to perform a death notification at a series of homes, late at night, saying that their loved one had died in a motor vehicle accident, and it appears they were intoxicated, and that maybe a good funeral home could fix him up for a viewing etc. In reality, they had all been arrested for drunk driving and were sitting in the drunk tank where inexplicably the jail phone was out of order. They all get taxis home in the morning, and as you can imagine, hilarity ensues when they get home (one of the spouses is caught celebrating with their lover, one has killed herself). Anyway, for research I bought a couple textbooks on death notification.

My Grandparents sent 3 sons, a daughter and a future son-in-law to WW II and a Son to Korea, Then my parents sent 2 sons and a daughter to Desert Storm 1990-91. All made it home, But My former Husband's Family sent 2 sons to Viet Nam and only one came home. My Brother-in-law was struck down in his prime at age 20. This was a very well put together piece of film and there was nothing wrong with it.
