And also just for all of you guys to think: how many successful lawyers, how many successful doctors, how many successful engineers, how many successful people of any career field didn’t go to an Ivy League? SO MANY. The name of the college doesn’t matter. In the end, you’re there to study for your future career; going to a big name school is only a bonus if you think about it. Also just a p.s.: I went to this open house engineering camp thing at a university and one of the women there, who was some type of an engineer working with the making of products, said that when she’s hiring people, the name of what university that person went to literally gets glanced at for a second. Cause in the end, your effort and experience are what matter, not where you came from.

I just graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the University of the People, which was a fantastic tuition-free accredited online University. We were told at the start of Freshman year that we would need 15-25 hours a week of study time. We write 4 papers a week. It was extremely time-consuming and they expect you to be an active learner. The professors really helped if you reach out for assistance. But I averaged about 25 hours a week. It is a very collaborative learning institution. I graduated Magna Cum Laude. I really learned how to write and think like an academic, which is the focus of the school rather than memorization. I accepted a high-paying job in AI which I really like. I studied tuition-free. Go there if you want to learn and be happy, rather than prestige and bragging rights.

My passions are physics, music (especially playing bass), and video games. I can write whole essays on each of these. But I have no notable achievements in any of these. My main eca is that I co-founded my school's outreach club and served as the vice president (IT) of that club. This is the first ever outreach club in any institution in my (developing) country. I preached the idea of educational outreach to thousands of students in my school who had never even heard the word 'outreach' before. I also surveyed hundreds of underprivileged familiies living in slums and found out the 5 root problems that they had and collaborated with my country's top NGO to solve those problems. Additionally, I have 5 years of experience in graphic design in various non-profit organisations. As you can see, my ECAs are all over the place and none of them are even remotely related to my passions. Would you please help me connect the dots and somehow find a way to present my ECAs as relevant to my yearnings? That would be a great help!

Don' make your life revolve around want colleges want- do what makes you happy and pushes you (within reason). Highschool is for discovering what you enjoy.

This hit home for us too. People who rationalized/defended it probably really didn’t understand/know the whole story. I feel the ring leader AND his clients were equally at fault and should have been held equally accountable; these clients were not being tricked or taken advantage of - these were partners in crime. Last, there is a distinction between a secret bribe (which just gets pocketed) and a pledge/donation that hopefully is going towards the education and scholarships.

What they are looking for is evidence of passion in whatever it is you do. Even if you only have one extra-curricular activity they are looking for some sort of extraordinary contribution you have made that has benefited that organization and has benefited you in some way. They will ask you for what it was you changed or improved. They will also want you to show what has changed and improved in you, and want you to tell them about it. If you have done it with passion it will be obvious to assessors in your writing style and also in the length of your testimony. Believe me you will not have a problem about what to write, or a problem about not being able to write enough. Less is more, which is why I suggest limiting your activities, preferably to one. You need to put your heart and soul into it.
