I recall David Coleman interviewing her at the end of the race. She had done a PB and won the silver medal. Coleman's opnenng to her was "What went wrong...." She was stunned by the remark.

Great first leg here which set us up well. Kathy on the last leg would've been a better choice?

There were no Russians or Germans in the race. They were already running fast than 12.85. Benita got lucky.

I've watched this so many times over the years and still, 56 years later, I simply cannot understand how Lillian lost to the French girl. Board had the race won with just yards to go. It's quite bizarre. (I saw an explanation later that Colette Besson had trained for 3 months at altitude to acclimatise to running in the thin air of Mexico City, but that STILL doesn't explain it!).

This was just a chemistry class with crooked, worthless medals for the cheating East Germans, Czechoslovaks and Soviets. Feel sorry for Kathy Smallwood/Cook as she was probably robbed of so many medals in this period by East European drug cheats.

Jenkin's, showing all the benefits of the anabolic steroids he later was imprisoned for selling - on his special sauce here. There's people commenting here how great he ran here - Jenkins was a convicted steroid seller and also user.

alberto got off to a strong start, and kept it... that stride awesome. my track hero.. i ran the 800 in hs,, i tried the 400m,but its a kick in the ass race. no one runs both, except alberto..the record stands here in 2024.almost 1/2 a century, awesome. and i trully believe that the record will never be altered. coz no runs both at all in the history of track and field...

My earliest memory of Alan Pascoe was when he was a co-commentator with Adrian Metcalfe for ITV’s athletics coverage in the late 70s and early 80s. They commentated together on a golden era for the sport which included the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Coe made a serious tactical error slow pace that left a sprint finish against Ferner who could run 46 for 400. Coe had gears but only off fast races he always got done in slow tactical affair's. I said at the time it would happen and it did.
