Glen replies: In Australia, the things that live in mangroves and bite us around sunset are often called sandflies. In fact they are biting midges of the genus Culicoides; true sandflies are distantly related insects that also bite but most Australian species prefer to bite animals rather than people. So yes, biting midges are the same as mangrove sandflies.

@@rieloutreach2950 Thanks Glen, I always wondered what those grains of black pepper that bite looked like close up. Now I know ! Also the painful bite is different to a Mozzie and thanks to your video,....... the mouthparts are quite different, no wonder they hurt ! This all solves a few mysteries about the experience of outdoor life in Darwin.! Thanks

Awesome finding the brilliant Dr. Di Barton here. I still fondly remember the lessons I were fortuante enough to attende 20+ years ago. I wonder if the muscle parasite from a tang caught at Maggie island was ever researched further. Oh, and if Di reads this: I'm stil working on the peanut trick, no luck so far. Best regards the Norwegian elephant.
