The ECUs require power to run the engine. The main battery can run those for about 30 min. There is also a backup battery for ECU B that will provide an additional 30 minutes. So, you have 30-60 mins before the engine shuts down. This is similar to having two e-mags installed in a non FADEC system.

After non flight for 25+ years, the da40 was a joy to fly. I did get reprimanded by ATC prior to T/O for having squeezed the mike button on the stick while exclaiming to my passengers "that's the reason for the TFR" as VP Pence was landing at an airport very close to my departure airport!

Definitely helps me out with my own DA40 landings. Reinforcing the importance of a stabilized approach is the biggest thing I've negated to implement. I usually come in too fast or high, which leads to a bounce and then a go-around. Some other things too I noticed with your student that I've been doing is forcing the plane down even while in flare. This leads to a bounce, or at best a hop like shown in the video. Thank you for the video and all the camera action. It really helps visualize what I've been doing incorrectly and will be something I'll keep in mind next flight.

Just found your channel, and I’m glad I did!!! I’m 12 hrs in at a 141 and have been flying the DA-40. My issue is maintaining center line on takeoff and landings. We did some taxi training at an untoward airport and it helped. I start having a problem 15-20kts before Vr

The checkout guy is flying a power on type of approach. The setup is; get slow and stable, add power to maintain alt.. I prefer energy management over throttle pumping. The pilot is not comfortable in slow flight. needs to work on that... All those speeds for the pattern should be defined as power settings!

I enjoy your videos. Your DA40 is the same as the DA40 (268DS) I flew last summer with CFIs at KROC, where I live now. Waiting on the FAA for a special issuance and then at age 64 I hope to complete the flying I started as a teenager learning to fly a 152 before I learned to drive! Flying the DA40 is so much fun and there’s always that ramp appeal… I’ve saved your videos to a playlist so when I get the 3rd class medical I’ll be using my XPlane simulator every day, studying for the PP “written” and consulting your videos for reference to compliment my work with the CFIs.

Would u please explain FAF at an altitude and not the HACNI VOR?
@diamondstarpilot
@diamondstarpilot 2 ай бұрын
Precision approaches (ILS, LPV) use a glide slope for vertical guidance whereas non precision approaches (LNAV, LNAV/VNAV) use waypoints with assigned minimum altitudes for vertical guidance. When flying a precision approach , you are only concerned with staying on the glideslope (the waypoints have no bearing on your altitude) so, the FAF is altitude based rather than waypoint based. On the approach plate, the lightening bolt indicates the final approach fix (altitude) for a precision approach and the Maltese cross indicates the final approach fix (waypoint) for a non precision approach. Hope this helps.

What do you think happened on that landing at the end? Seemed to me like there wasn't enough flare so the plane porpoised a bit.
@diamondstarpilot
@diamondstarpilot 3 ай бұрын
I think you are correct. He touched down in a flat 3 point attitude and did not apply back pressure after touchdown to keep pressure off of the nose wheel. This resulted in a mini porpoise. This is a case where video is invaluable. Sometimes it is hard to diagnose problems from inside the cockpit but, the cause is quite clear on video.

You’re a great resource for DA40 pilots out there. Especially pilots who are new to the airframe. Trained in a 172 and soon after receiving PPL, transitioned to the Diamond this past year. Took me about 8 hours to get the hang of it. Hated it at first but now it’s my favorite. Question mark flow check is key! Keep up the good work.

Does the DA40 stall horn really go off that early? Or what? on a 172 you would be lucky to hear it while you are flaring almost haha.
@diamondstarpilot
@diamondstarpilot 3 ай бұрын
When that video was made, the stall horn had a habit of sounding a bit earlier (10-15 kts above stall speed) than it was supposed to. After replacing the reed, the warning speed dropped about 5 kts. You will still here it on landing though. The official spec for the horn is it should start sounding 5-10kts above stall speed. Stall speed at Vso is 49kts and the horn now starts squealing right about 59.

Nothing is cheap in getting your PPL, I’m 48 hours in and have solo’d I’m preparing for my cross country solo. It is without question the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Including my Ph.D and 2 masters. I’m 54 years old and wanted to something stimulating and useful. Save up, or just do a lesson every now and then. I would recommend a good online ground school and get that knocked out and fly as you can afford it. It’s an absolute blast.

I'll never forget: Power=altitude gain or loss. If sinking low, with the threshold rising, add...too high with threshold moving down the windscreen, reduce power. Pitch changes your airspeed. Maintain your approach speed and only when you can make the last third of the runway (unless you have a super long runway) do you start adding flaps to bring your touchdown point further back. This ensures that in the event of power loss you can make the runway. Don't hang everything out in the air unless you are too high. In that case a forward slip, without passengers, will lose excess altitude. But better to just set up right the first time and gently let the plane touch down. Do NOT fly it to the ground or you can do a 3 point landing on a tricycle gear A/P and risk pranging the nose gear or wheelbarrow! I loved working on my landings at short strips and nailing them!

Man I so feel this. I have 400+ landings in mostly PA28 and some C172s. Landings are never boring but I have a pretty easy time of it in the Piper particularly. But me and a buddy just bought a DA40 and feeling a little humble again haha. Twenty-four landings logged and uhhh... well I haven't punished the plane too bad. Good thing that rudder is so big. X-winds lately have been a little sporty.

I have worked with many people transitioning from Pipers and Cessnas to the Diamond. Universally, it takes them a while to become accustomed to the more precise handling and slippery aerodynamics of the DA40. She loves to float and when you move the stick she responds. You'll get it with a little practice. Good Luck!

Question for you…. I fly a DA40 all the time, and I normally go full prop only once I get on final and at approach speed. Any reason you do that so early in the pattern? Just curious.
@diamondstarpilot
@diamondstarpilot 5 ай бұрын
There is no technical reason to go full prop when reducing the power on downwind. My rationale is twofold-1.it seams logical to group power reduction, full prop, fuel pump and full rich into a single group and 2. it allows for a quick double check on base or final affording two opportunities to ensure it was done. I try to keep the workload on final to a minimum. Some students have a hard enough time remembering to put the final notch of flaps in because they are so focused on aiming point and speed. The official Diamond checklist shows it being done on final but, this is the way I was taught and I think for the reasons I listed, it makes sense. Thanks for watching.
