"Until The Day Is Done" is a gorgeous song that ranks with their very best. It puts chills up my spine every time, it's so good. It and "We All Go Back To Where We Belong" are their final two genuine masterpieces.

The references to Jacknife Lee's penchant for loud production for R.E.M.'s last two albums in your deep dives for those LPs brought me back here to "Green", and to the 25th Anniversary version, which I bought. Why does this presumably remastered version of "Green" sound so conspicuously low in volume, I wonder? Was it not, in fact, remastered at all, as it seems? I really have to crank "Green" up to get any impact or satisfaction out of it. But the 25th Anniversary versions of all of the IRS albums that preceded it sound great, and full and powerful. I don't get this.

Great choice! I’m Canadian and grew up with their music. I’ve seen Burton about 4 times & the Guess Who when they reunited for a tour. Something about Burton & he’s seamless. Makes everything look so effortless. Like he’s sitting in your living room or something ❤

Regardless of what anyone says I believe that is Ozzy coughing- it just has his voice characteristics. Also Tony himself said they were a Heavy Rock band not metal. The German band Lucifer's Friend was considered a band that pioneered heavy metal.

This may be my favorite REM album; period. It almost flawless on every level. The themes and musicality is off the charts here; which is really astonishing for a bands 3rd album. I almost don’t even hear these songs as individual tracks; but as connected together in a cosmic dreamscape. You know how when you wake up from a fresh dream and you just can’t make sense of it? That’s what this record feels like to me; a dream, shifting from one scene to the next with no segue ways; and often no sense - like floating downstream on a river and passing by a collection of oddballs, trees, carnivals and campfires. What a gem!! As good as any Beatles album.

What a masterpiece from REM; really is the culmination of their career up to that point. The depth and maturity of their songs is really quite staggering here; they almost followed a Beatles-like progression where each album got deeper, better, more sophisticated in terms of lyrics, themes and musicality. I really like “Odd Fellows Local”, really cool guitars and heavy vibe. This album and most of their 2-3 prior releases were as good as any Beatles album.

Nice video!! Agree, REM just got better and better during this stage of their career. The depth and scale of this album is really staggering when you compare each song. They not only could rock; but also could pen interesting and often profound lyrics. My only disagreement would be with “Swan Swan H”; I think it’s a throwback song to another era; with a heavy southern gothic feel - I could almost imagine this being sung by Confederate soldiers around a campfire on a warm Georgia evening. Listen to it with that in mind!

*Sigh.* "Monster". This was the unholy album that drove me away from R.E.M. in self-righteous disgust, and stopped me full-force from listening to them for (gasp!) thirty years. I gather I wasn't alone in this. 🙂 As incredible as it seems to me now, I let "Monster" and my aversion to it prevent me from ever hearing "New Adventures...", "Up", "Reveal", "Around The Sun", "Accelerate", and "Collapse Into Now" when they were originally released. It was only this year, finally - DECADES later - that I decided to buy and explore these later efforts, and maybe to see what I was missing. It was this personal project of exploration and discovery that opened my eyes, and led me to the inescapable conclusion that - by golly , beyond all doubt! - R.E.M. is my all-time favorite American band. It's hard to turn a blind eye - or a deaf ear, I should say - to the sheer volume of quality songwriting in R.E.M.'s catalog over the years, or to the staggering number of great songs and recorded song performances that emerged from them, even as their popularity waned. This was a GREAT band. I can even find merit in "Monster" now, seeing as they were only doing at the time what they've always done, which was to make each album different from the one before. They certainly achieved that with "Monster"! I LIKE the album now...but honestly can't say I love it, or want to listen to it much still. Most of the songs are strong, and "Bang And Blame" is fantastic. I still think "Tongue", "Let Me In", and "Star 69" are some of the worst songs they've done. There's a coldness to the whole thing that keeps me at a distance at times ; maybe it seems overly calculated as "The Great Glam Experiment". I have to be in the mood for it. I definitely like the original mix better than Scott Litt's remix on the 25th anniversary release.

I remember being very put off by Monster when I bought it, wondering “why does it have to be so damn loud and noisy? No subtlety at all. It has grown on me but one of the R.E.M albums I play the least. Let Me In is just a wall of noise and Tongue is almost a parody. I’m all for a band expanding their sound but Monster seemed like an unnecessary stab at grunge after everyone else had already left the party.

Ian Hunter is as old as a fossil but still makes strong solo albums. The first two Mott The Hoople albums do in fact sound like Dylan. Later they kinda changed to Glam Rock with anthems like ROLL AWAY THE STONE. I seen the two cds you received. Now after your reviews, I need to add them to my collection too.

"Why Not Smile" 9. "Daysleeper" 10. "I'm Not Over You" (short, hidden demo song, tucked into "Diminished" on the original album) 11. "Parakeet"

Bill Berry is sorely missed, but there's great variety on "Up". I like to listen to albums sequentially and in their entirety, but "Sad Professor", "You're In The Air", and "Diminished" are weak and sluggish songs that impede the the momentum of the track listing. These contribute to a feeling for me that the LP drags, and is way too long. The backseat producer in me would've purged these songs and also "Fails To Climb", which is too downbeat an ending. This might've made a better B side, with the intriguing "Parakeet" a better choice for the closer. I'd've kept the cool Easter egg and snippet of a demo that's nestled inside "Diminished", though, and slotted it to lead into "Parakeet". I really like all the other compositions on this album, and think each is strong.

I think there a couple of songs on this final album that just sound tired and lacking in inspiration. This observation seems to be supported by Michael Stipe's own remark at the time, about how he needed to be away from "this" for a long while (meaning the creation and performance of new R.E.M. music). There are more than a few great tracks on this, the band's swan song LP. But a few come across as old ground being plowed up again, or replicated conceptually. "Blue" is merely the much better "Country Feedback" revisited, with lyrical nods to "Electrolite" and "E-Bow the Letter". "Oh My Heart", pretty as it is, is basically "Houston" Part 2. There are also two mediocre songs, "Überlin" and "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I", which add nothing special to the proceedings. "Überlin" promises to be catchy, but it goes on for too long and gets boring fast. As with "Out Of Time", I think the sequencing on "Collapse Into Now" is odd, as well. This could've been a much stronger final statement by the band with better sequencing, and if the weak tracks had been purged and replaced by the three new songs that appeared on the subsequent "Part Lies..." retrospective. If "It Happened Today", "We All Go Back To Where We Belong", and "Hallelujah" had comprised an aural triptych to close out this denouement album, it could've been the band's most powerful LP wind down of 'em all.
