Very easy to hear the material when you explain each and every single parameter value (even the ones at zero), the entire time. Fake British accent weaving in and out adds extra pretentiousness 10/10

This is interesting! I don't typically find myself losing my stride due to a sort of "mix-as-you-go" production style, but I also don't try to put the whole mix down, it's really more about having the general shape of the mix in mind to make sure that it works with the arrangement while the arrangement is still fluid.

Great video Damian. I use Waves plug ins for my limiting and compression but this looks interesting. I have a question for you though. I am not the best singer but its so much easier for me to sing rather than find an artist when I'm fleshing out a new song/idea. What tips could you give regarding someone whos voice isn't the strongest ?
@HereIsDamian
@HereIsDamian Жыл бұрын
Hey Kev, the voice is a muscle just like any other in the body. Which means it can be trained and strengthened. So really, just practice and sing a lot and your voice will naturally get stronger. A good vocal coach will be able to help you do this very deliberately and methodically, and this will open up a lot more creative and expressive potential for you. Regardless of the strength of a vocalist, once in the studio the normal criteria apply, get the best take possible, comp with care and affection, edit to enhance the performance appropriately, and do a great mix. Feel free to jump into The Complete Producer Network to post this question and get some feedback from other music makers working on the same question 🥂

@0x44Monad
@0x44Monad Жыл бұрын
@@HereIsDamian Yeah I had good success with it on a synth but I wasn't sure how to use it on my kick or drum bus. I frequently do parallel compression or parallel processing and there's some phasing issues there as you brought up. If I understood you right. Would you be inclined into thinking you'd use this on both a kick to make it pounding, and then also on a drum bus that includes the full range of percussion? There's also a technique in EDM/Techno where you process a "rumble" that is a reverb of the kick into the 30-60 range which is either offset to not phase with the kick or ducked on the attack of the kick. I wasn't sure how I might use this to do that workflow because that usually requires a side chain. This seems like I may be able to do the same thing tweaking the attack/release?
@HereIsDamian
@HereIsDamian Жыл бұрын
Hey buddy, I'd be more inclined to just use it on a drum bus rather than individual drum elements, though of course it's totally up to you how to run it. The mix knob is all phase aligned with the dry signal, so that's the simplest way to do parallel, though I do love having a parallel on a separate fader too. Parallel on a separate fader / channel will be phase accurate if you don't use any of the tone control section - they can be bypassed easily. You could use it as a more conventional processor in that case, though it's far from conventional even in that context. The parellel filtered down low end kick technique has been around since the 70s or early 80s. I messed with it a little bit earlier in my career but found it to be a bit fussy and unpredictable, way better to just get the right sample and process it simply. The longer I mix, the more simple and direct my approach to low end becomes, and the more banging my records get. ;-)

@@HereIsDamian Restarted everything, after creating more space on my hard drive. Apple says here's your hard drive space now fill it with our products in the applications folder, in your Library fill it with plugins, extensions, presets, pictures and movies, clogging up the hard drive. Apple offer so little space to hold everything you need or may want, and then they charge a fortune to you, if you want more space for everything. They it appears, purposefully, make it nearly impossible to have external drives support their Mac OS systems, so you're left with externals as one storage placement devices. Therefore you're forced to buy and increase the space necessary to have your OS work within your main hard drive, leaving you with clutter. After 20 to 30 years, you'd think they'd take their profits made, almost a Trillion$, and advance their systems, and if you don't upgrade your hardware they penalize you, by leaving you out of their newer Operating Systems. They do not support their long term client purchasers. Anyway, enough with my rant, I've got it working and that''s enough.

@@HereIsDamian Hey, nice to have a reply :). It would be nice to have a video advice for producers that kind of lose their motivation of making music. I'm talking about burnout. I guess the solution is to get reconnected with the "why" we invested ourselves into music. Nowadays, music is kind of commodity. We don't buy anymore from music stores. There is spotify or other music distribution that make available music for cheap fee. It's a good thing to have more way to spread to the world the music that we make but the reward for small producers (not known) is not up to par for the sacrifices (softwares, music production, stuff) ... that sometimes, we are kind of silly to cling to a "job" that doesn't pay your bills in full.

Might be time to do a fresh OS install and rebuild your system piece by piece if you're getting those kinds of issues. I've been running Live 11 constantly since the beta and it's been great. But in the past I've lost big chunks of my life to figuring out which plugins and applications on my computer slow things down. I run a suuuuuuuper tight ship, hardly installing anything else on there, and it runs like a dream. To clarify, I do run plenty of plugs, but I'm always hyper aware any time I install anything about what kind of knock on effects they have on music stability. I hope the situation improves for you :-)

Discovered you from the HOWA podcast! Thanks for this excellent breakdown Damian. I'd be really interested to see the process of how/when you move a project from Ableton to Pro Tools. I want to do this myself, but I'm still trying to determine when is the right time and how to transfer multi-tracks in the best way (with or without effects, mix/mastering chains, etc.)
@HereIsDamian
@HereIsDamian 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Josh, thanks for the kind encouragement, and that’s great that you heard the HOWA episode. Simply put, I move stuff over into Pro Tools either in advance of a big batch of recording (in which case I’ll send over a few subgroups) or when I feel I have maximized the production of the song, maximized the ideas, and that all that is remaining is the mix. If I’ve done a lot of recording I’ll finish up comping and editing in Pro Tools , then will print a couple of subgroups to bring back into Live to act as anchors if I’m developing any further programming. Thanks to covid I haven’t done any in person sessions since Live 11 became available; I’m sure I’ll do a lot more recording in there in my room, but I imagine I’ll still want to be in ProTools for heavy duty tracking sessions. My program The Beats Accelerator Process has a full breakdown of how I prep and export my multitracks from Live , you can get on the waitlist for the next round at www.beatsaccelerator.com Please feel free to come hang out at www.completeproducer.net and over on www.Twitch.tv/HereIsDamian too to connect with a wonderfully positive and supportive group of people involved in all aspects of music production :)

As a producer who alternates between ProTools and Live, that video was really useful. While those new Ableton functionalities are really exciting and useful, ProTools’s workflow for tracking live instruments or vocals is still the king in my opinion. I will try Ableton’s workflow when I get Live 11 tho, maybe I’ll end up liking it more. At the moment tho, somethings seem a bit too finicky to work for me when doing client work.
@HereIsDamian
@HereIsDamian 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the great comment. Yeah I agree that Pro Tools is still definitely the place to do tracking for live instruments, and I’m happy Ableton Live isn’t trying too hard to fill that niche. I’ve been using the Beta of Live 11 for quite a while now and really love that these new features bring an additional creative dimension - they’ve expanded on what makes Live great but aren’t trying to put themselves into Pro Tools territory. I’m happy to have really clear choices about what kind of work I do where, and to have the best environments for either of those processes.
