I think Neil's in ear monitors are mostly drums with perhaps no guitar and a bit of vocal.. A very strange mix to play to...and probably part of why a mistake like this - zoning out and jumping ahead to the next section - could easily happen to him.

I wouldn't call it a train-wreck - it's barely perceptible unless, like most Rush fans, you've heard the song a thousand times, playing air drums in the car. Just a temporary brain-fart. Every musician gets them.
@BrigidFitch21123 жыл бұрын
I saw one (unfortunately no video) on R30 in Noblesville, IN where they were playing La Villa Strangioto. Alex came in 2 measures early in the last section, and wasn't paying attention. Geddy stayed eye locked with Neil to stay with him, jumped up and down to try to clue Alex in, just shrugged, and carried on. It never did come together even at the end when even Geddy and Neil weren't together. They're human - it happens. The last several seconds it sounded like they were all on about a half-second delay from each other. Total mess.

All he did was play the next stage of the song early, but he played it to perfection. He played at :19 what he should have played at :43. He played the right parts at the wrong time, and they still held it together before the end, now those are pros. Notice Alex and Geddy just kept playing their parts as if Neil was playing correctly, because they knew Neil would eventually find his way back and they would finish it out. That's how you do it.

@usejustonce2386 Жыл бұрын
It's definitely amazing but no... that's not how you do it. Musicians are supposed to play WITH each other not IN SPITE OF each other. I love Rush but this is just NOT what I would have expected out of musicians of their caliber.
@mikes9316 Жыл бұрын
Bro, if you’re a performer, you know the show must go on. As well as this was played, by the time you realize it’s off, it’s almost over. Pushing through live is FAR better than stopping. The person who’s off can stop just long enough to reacquire, but that’s it. Anything more and the train goes off the rails. Bravo, guys!

This is probably one of the most fascinating mistakes I’ve ever heard. If you listen carefully, Neil is playing his drum part perfectly after Alex’s solo... DURING Alex’s solo! He basically jumped ahead 16 measures and kept going! I can only assume that something went off in his in-ear monitor mix where he played along to whatever he was hearing, and couldn’t properly hear where Geddy and Alex were. I am amazed they were able to sync back up later, let alone finish the song! It’s their professional handling of mistakes like this which makes me admire them even more as musicians and people. They simply “got on with it!”

a true trainwreck in a live situation is when you get off the tracks and CAN"T get back on the tracks. With the 7/8 timing that overlapped this particular "flub", it's amazing they recovered.... but they did.

I remember back on the Vapor Trails tour in Charlotte (their 3rd show of the tour I think). There was a similar train wreck that happened in the same section of the song. I think when Neil felt particularly "frisky" he would try and stretch out drumming wise in the song. I'm pretty sure that section is in 7 so it shouldn't be new territory for Neil. Still for the song to get to that point of almost smashing into the earth, but have the guys pull up just at the last moment, speaks volumes to their professionalism!

One thing for sure his that it was very hot out that day and by the third song I was sweating bad and I was only air drumming. I remember thinking, poor Neil. I thought the set list was full of some of Neil's more structured songs and I was concerned that he would'nt be able to go the full tour. I also saw them in Buffalo (VIP) & Newark(VIP), second row directly in front of Alex Mic stand. Wow! What a night that was. The Buffalo show was flawless and would have been a great one for the live recording. Michael Moore sat around 5 rows behind me in Newark and I snaped a selfie with him and I met Ray Daniels.

I was at this show, I caught onto it when it happened. It was a shocker because in my lifetime of listening and seeing Rush, Neil never screws up. I almost cried. I understand the boys are in their 60's now and I guess I take it for granted of how awesome and solid they've been for all these years. But I can always appreciate the professionalism to keep it going and get it back in time. Other than than this and the equip. malfunction during 2112.... the show and the band as always was still magical.
@tolwyn_doom9 жыл бұрын
It actually makes me wonder how they rehearse and what is pumped into their in-ear monitors. Does Neil just listen to a studio version of the song and play along or does he "truly" hear Geddy and Alex? Watching this, I'm assuming more the former. Which kinda ruins what I would consider a part of the magic in their show.
@heraldyoman97169 жыл бұрын
Tolwyn The former would be improbable though. Their live performance is different from the studio versions. So Neil probably had the drum tracks memorized though he was somewhat off.
@tolwyn_doom9 жыл бұрын
Herald Yoman Yes, but some of their songs depend upon even NON-triggered synth parts for synching (Big Money, Red Sector A, this song, etc.) There are parts that neither Alex nor Geddy "trigger." The interesting question I meant was that Neil should be hearing Alex and Geddy's parts, too, as well as Geddy's singing...
@heraldyoman97169 жыл бұрын
Tolwyn but maybe it is. I will look into that.

Remember, those men are in their sixties with numerous aging ailments playing songs now from decades ago is amazing in itself. To come out one more time and give their fans one more glorious tour is even more incredible. To post mistakes and criticizes them, unbelievable. Why post stuff like this, I don't understand. What significance is this. What type of Rush fan points out their mistakes.
@PanasonicYouth219 жыл бұрын
Philip Santillan I'm as big as a Rush fan as they come, and I don't mind this whatsoever. It's not a criticism, at all- it's quite the anomaly for Neil to be off so significantly and noticeably as he is in this video. They're such an absolute fucking machine as a live performing band that it's really very interesting to be reminded that they're still human at the end of the day.

Ziggyzag Zi He broke a string (which is a lot more noticeable when he plays a signature Access LP with the whammy bar) and traded to another guitar temporarily. He kept looking off stage for the tech to restring it and give it back. Then he switched back again instead of just finishing the song with the flame top LP.
