Alchemy also means "a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination." This is a song about Travis and her transofrmation back from heartbreak.

The easiest way to explain it is by saying that it is an early form of what we now call chemistry. The song is indeed full of references to Travis, starting from the title because she said him calling her out on his podcast was METAL as hell, so lets turn that metal into gold... Putting Travis on the map, His amateur pr person reposting a picture with a clownface over Taylor, His heart sign when he scored, heroine in the way he talks about her, shirts off (Jason), Where's the trophy (superbowl)? He just comes running over to me (the guy on the chiefs coming straight home to me).

The start is where she came from to get to the new guy, be that a physical thing or a falling back in love thing that people explain it as. That makes the new guy the subject because its the road traveled to get to him. It is like you talking about taking out your new boyfriend and his parents to diner and then saying after that we had a nice romantic stroll along the beach. There is no way you are having that stroll with the parents, they are not the subject in that story arc.
