Oou thanks for the reminder of Catherine House. That's been on my TBR for a hot minute. Just added it to my Library TBR List so I get to it sooner. If you like a kinda weird kinda culty book, you may like Here in Avalon by Tara Isabella Burton (a mysterious cabaret that performs on a moving boat), and The World Cannot Give by same author.. TWCG has dark academia vibes. There's also the Merry Dredgers by Jeremy Shipp.. set at an abandoned amusement park.

That's an interesting point about pop culture references. I don't mind them personally, but I think it's all about how they're used! I've read many books that would be all the worse if the references were removed (I mean, a melancholic teenager from 2013 would just not hit the same without the book mentioning Tumblr), but I also recall some titles that would definitely become less understandable to someone trying to read then even a few years into the future. It's all about the right balance, I suppose!

Totally!! I feel like (as with most things) it really comes down to execution and context. There are definitely some books with a lot of pop culture references where I’m rolling my eyes, and then other books with a lot of pop culture references where I think it really works. Plot, characterization, and especially writing style really plays a part in whether it will work or not.

If your love language is smut then you probably love this one. I was disappointed, I felt like MFC Rue had no personality and the MMC was a bit creepy he was instantly in love. I felt they didn't have any real chemistry.

@@alliewithbooks I felt like she was just so focus on the smut that the plot, the characters development and the chemistry between the characters took a back burner. For example the MMC kept saying he like Rue humor but not once did I ever felt like it was shown that she was funny she felt robotic to me.
