I’ve never met Steve, but he was and is the mentor he never knew he was to me. I record sound for film, but was a musician back in the day. I have a Steve Albini folder in my email with any interviews I can find with Steve on KZbin an online. I’ve learned so much about microphones and how sound frequencies work together and too many things to mention from Steve. Along with that, I find him to be hilarious and highly intelligent. I’ve always thought if I had the money to burn, I would travel to Chicago and pay a day’s recording fee just to hang out with him and talk about microphones and experience what it’s like to just be in that studio and to meet Steve. Thank you Steve Albini for being Steve Albini. #thankyoustevealbini

The rubber ones that look like a road cone with 3 rings on a stick with a string attached are the best cheap solution I've ever found & use all the time, if they fall out on stage you just put them back with the stem really easily & you can adjust how far in you want them for whatever application. Definitely the best option for musicians, the last thing you want is to have to search a dark filthy stage for the one you dropped & put it back in with your filthy fingers. The foam ones are only good for blocking out as much sound as possible for sleeping or power tools etc but those are the free ones at venues so you have to try and balance them just inside the entrance of the ear canal enough to stop the cymbals and guitar amps from shredding your ears but not so much to shut out all the top end... and then they fall out when you start dancing or nodding with enthusiasm and you have to pick them up off the filthy floor with your filthy fingers etc... Before venues started handing them out (very recently really) I would just grab a wedge of toilet paper and make small plugs with that, surprisingly effective.

If Sandburg's poem were a person, Steve's a top candidate. "Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job..." Loving it, and getting us all to love it. Ambassador for the city and to our souls. Thank you for everything.

I'm glad that Steve stopped being such a prick later in his life... Cuz man he was a prick. I met him maybe 15 years difference between and what a difference that time made. I think just generally seemed happier in his life... Or maybe he just got it out of his system.

This is fucked up.... I was in high school 40 fucking years ago when I traded the Meat Puppets' Up on the Sun with a friend for Big Black's Atomizer and they quickly became my favourite band. I can't believe these guys are now getting old and dying. WTF? They should all live forever. At least their music will.

Had the great privilege of zoom chat with Steve for about 40 minutes. I was giddy for the first 10 odd & Steve sensed that & put me at ease. The mark of a great person he was, apart from his knowledge, was that he offered to do the zoom around midnight his time, to cater for the OS time difference. I wouldn’t have it considering he would’ve already had a long day in the studio. ..we settled for 7pm ish Chicago time…I’ll cherish this memory & blessed to meet him. What a great person 🖤🙏🏻

Thank you for this. I was lucky enough to have a few interactions with Steve way back when... and I think the world will be unravelling his influence as an incredible engineer and a an incredibly solid human being for a long time to come. He didn't need to give me the time of day as a nobody teenager publishing a tiny fanzine, he didn't need to send us hand written letters with funny drawings on them, but he did. Also, changed the landscape of modern sound. RIP.
