Why wouldn't these parks with Orcas, have tranquilizer guns at hand? These Orcas don't kill fast. They take their time, for whatever reason. The reason doesn't really matter. My point is there is almost always plenty of time to get clean shots at the Orca. They do it to elephants. Rhinos, etc. The fact that they just stand there and do basically nothing to take control of the Orca and save the trainer. Women..SMH. This is why so many bad decisions are made. Women make life and death decisions with emotions, instead of factual solutions.

I understand "looking from both sides"...but it's hard whrn one side is clearly viewing extremely intelligent creatures as pets. Dogs were literally made to be domesticated, like...literally. Orcas are not. It's like putting a human in a cage and making it dance with promise of food to me. I understand, for example, *SOME* zoos and most wildlife conservation sanctuaries. The ones that clearly show they care about the animals and are actually saving them instead of taking perfectly healthy babies, putting them in tiny pools, and making them preform like clowns for the masses. And at least clowns get to go home. We are animals, we are just a certain species of animals. Prison is a punishment, but we put animals in conditions that are pretty nuch no better, if not worse, and say they should for some reason be greatful. That's so...gross to me.

Many years ago when I was serving in the U.S. Navy and friend and I would swim each night in a 25 meter pool. Were we experimenting with how far we could swim with one breath. We would hyperventilate until dizzy then push off the pool edge. At first we worked on one pool length. It involved hyperventilating and swimming under water using the very minimum effort for the distance covered. Then we decided to attempt two lengths. (Hyperventilating somehow blocks the impulse to breath.) Well, my friend went first and at 1 1/2 lengths he broached and his lips were purple! I made the attempt and at 1 1/2 lengths I started experiencing what felt like thousands of pin pricks all over my upper body. I surfaced. Oh well.

I'm an old person in KZbin years at 42, so I was in my 20s when this first came out, and I absolutely loved it... until I realized that people were buying into it. I thought it was all made in good fun, but now I'm not so sure. I like this film in the same way I like Dracula 2000, a terrible vampire movie starring Gerard Butler, but I really liked that they gave a reason that Dracula dislikes crosses and silver by making him Judas Iscariot cursed with long life. Why does he have long life? When you bring God into it, nothing is off the table. The cross reminds Dracu-judas of his betrayal, and the silver reminds him of his reward. But I digress, both films are silly as heck, but introduce semi-believable (depending on how much you're willing to suspend disbelief/your religious beliefs for the latter) reasons for things which should be completely unbelievable. Mermaids are ridiculous if they are half human, (a mammalian great ape), and half fish, (a freakin' fish), two branches of the animal kingdom so far separated that never the two could breed. However, if we look at convergent evolution and how cetaceans evolved flukes similar to fishes tails, and we make some leaps, it becomes a fun idea, as long as people realize IT'S JUST FICTION!!! Otherwise, megalodon might be real, the earth is flat, the moon landing is fake, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

I just listened to this intending to have it on in the background while doing homework like I usually do with podcasts, but your discussion was so interesting and well-made that I got sucked in! You guys both made great points and analyzed the movie and cetacean captivity in general really well. It’s so refreshing to see people treat this subject with the nuance it deserves rather than just being extremely pro or extremely anti, as well as ppl who realize that Blackfish is neither all true or all lies. I’m definitely a bit more pro-cap than Taylor (I plan on working at an AZA zoo or aquarium in the future) but I respect her viewpoint and Kendy’s as well

It wasn’t a movie! I seen it! It was LIVE on animal planet. Everyone go look at the body found documentary and pay close attention to the tail!!! (it’s shaped like a seashell) Then go look at the Barnum and Bailey’s real mermaid from the 1800s…Then go look at the video of the mermaid on the rock in Israel….Then go look at the mermaid seen in California splashing its tail…They are all the same animal. You won’t have any doubts after you see! Just pay close attention to the tails.

Hi there, First off, I appreciate the neutral viewpoint. I think the bottom line of the documentary was that fishing is vastly done illegally and is unnecessary. I think that if you can ask yourself the question: Do we need to eat fish or any meat to survive as a species? and the answer is yes, then do it sustainably. However if that answer is no, which I personally believe it is, then we shouldn't be doing it at all. (Here's my soapbox speech:) There's nothing you can't get from a totally plant based diet that you get from meat, so why support the most environmentally destructive industries in the world if we don't need it? For you guys and others who care about the Ocean, it should be a priority of saving the ocean over short term pleasure. I agree with your viewpoint that the good deeds certain mentioned organizations do should not be trumped by their bad. I think the documentary was just supposed to be an eye opener for those who are unaware of the amount of greed in the industry, not only by the fishers, but by those organizations that take money to support things they know is bad. I'm doubting they had intentions of winning an oscar or anything. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoyed this comment and I wish you the best of luck with your channel in the future!

In defense of Sea World, when people often talk about the darker parts of their past, nobody ever seems to mention that Sea World was under completely different ownership at the time. I want to say Sea World has had three different ownerships. The owners now had nothing to do with any of the negatives in the past.

Shamu was a Southern Resident (like Lolita, Hugo and Moby Doll). She was captured by Ted Griffin who wanted a companion for Namu. Shamu's mother was harpooned and killed in front of her. She didn't get along with Namu so Ted sold her to Seaworld in 1965. Seaworld named their shows in her honor.

I remember when this movie came out back in 2012, a lot of people thought it was real. The mass beaching it was based on happened in 2004, the film itself isn’t from that year, lol. And the actual “Bloop” recording sounds nothing like how it’s presented here. I miss when this would come on TV. At that time Animal Planet was really into mockumentary stuff like this, the Megalodon movie and “Lost Tapes”. Those were the days, lol. Even though I know it’s fake I still enjoy this movie and I really enjoy the look of the mermaids.

SeaWorld makes me so MAD.... They used ORCAS to line their bank accounts... They did not care about the animals.. The people that worked there were treated the same way.. They told there workers what to say and what to do... They poached the Orchas and cut open the dead ones, filled them with rocks and sank them... That alone would have wanted them to fuck off... The one in Ohio closed in the early 2000s and I am glad.... If I had to live in a pool fool of stuff that cleans pools and BLEACH ... You read that right BLEACH.... It was not only dangerous for the orcas but for those that worked in the tanks with them... my parents took me to SeaWorld when I was little and I have really no memory of that... It is good I don't... All SeaWorlds should be shut down for good...
