You can't play this type of music in Jamaica nowadays. I returned from a resort on the Jamaican north coast yesterday. The resort DJ asked people to provide a few of their own selections. Until then all they played was noise (aka Dancehall) and Hip Hop. I'm a Roots man to the core and decided to ask for Barry Brown's 'Separation'. Then I changed my mind, thinking it would be too hardcore for the crowd and decided on 'Dreamland' by Bunny Wailer. BUT I was beaten to the punch. Some other guy choose Burning Spear's 'Slavery Days'. One of the resort entertainment team went ballistic. I'm older than most and she immediately came up to me and said 'A yu select dat tune' ? I said no, then she focused on another older guy becoming increadingly more irate, then another and another. Each one of us not daring to look this young woman in the eye. We denied our love for Roots Reggae like Peter denied Jesus Christ. Roots Reggae in Jamaica is now a music that dare not speak its name.
