I think collin mccahon is a talentless spaz. His artist wife has more talent and possibly had a brain. Anne hamblett was her name.

In 1981 I started my first job at a bank in Grey Lynn, Auckland. I served Mr. McCahon a number of times. Initially I had no idea who he was but I think it was one of my colleagues who tipped me off. I wouldn't say we had conversations as such, just the odd word about bank-related stuff. My strongest memory is of Mr. McCahon's shyness and uninterrupted chain-smoking and his poor overall health. He was rather frail and I'm not surprised to learn from this documentary that he stopped painting soon after. I regret that, despite finding out who he was and his standing in the art world, it was only years after Mr. McCahon's death that I investigated his work. Thanks for the upload!

I went to see the exhibition today at the Auckland art gallery. Some very beautiful paintings. particularly the glass paintings for the convent in Remuera. Genius artist.

I have this DVD. When I was at Elam, a decade ago now, I would watch this almost daily and it heavily inspired my 3rd and 4th years final work. I was lucky enough to have my artist space in his old office area. So many fond memories watching this now as a 30 year old. I miss those days.

brilliant documentary, but that recurrent jingle is highly irritating.

Couldn't agree more but I just focused hard on his art and it burst my ear drum so I no longer hair the annoying jingle thing.

I didn't realise that, even as late as 1976, his work caused so much controversy. I left NZ in 1988, and by then he was widely regarded as the best NZ painter. NZ society has thankfully come a long way since then.
