There was famously a murder up there in 1868 when a 61 year old farm worker called David Baldy was brutally killed by a former lodger (Martin Brown) who was subsequently caught and hanged at Lewes Gaol.

There was an Isolation Hospital on the sea side east of Eastbourne. The foundations were there in the sixties when I used to fish there. It has gone since the harbour was built. I used to pass Tide mills when winter fishing in the sixties.

I remember walking there from Hampden Park with my parents in the early sixties. Lovely place.

Very interesting, thanks. I’m afraid it’s a very common story that once the military were let loose on other people’s property they indulged in mindless vandalism, and left a trail of destruction in their wake…

Park here maps.app.goo.gl/ET3NDuL5zzsjgNma8 Go up the bank and head off towards maps.app.goo.gl/XjXYcWDYmQDJyCHB8 There you can either follow the track to the left around the outside of the estate or go straight down through the grounds of the house via the public bridleway. Ultimately you want to get to here maps.app.goo.gl/NBmtGxNmJiDD6fnc7

WDC is allegedly strapped for cash and not that far from insolvency. Any remedial safety work and public liability insurance would probably be astronomic £.

My Mum and Dad used to talk of Wannock tea gardens, my Mum said she always loved and missed it. Maybe they even took me there as a child? It reminded me of my family and the areas surrounding Eastbourne, where I grew up.

It's definitely worth going there on Remembrance Sunday, lots of walkers and horse riders gather and there is the usual Last Post and 2 minutes silence followed by wreath laying. The Nutley to Duddleswell road closes for this but parking is allowed for visitors to the "grave"

I believe my uncle was one of the men on board. My mum told me about this. His name was Wilfred Brooks. Is there anyway to verify if his name is listed? He was a navigator. Thank you, I would be his niece if he had lived long enough to have been in my life. I am 68 years old and I live in Canada.

The tunnel was also later found to have weak points underneath the highstreet apparently. A shame though.

The circular walk from Hollies car park is one of my favourites in the summer. It passes by the Airman's Grave and it is a good walk to see some of the forest birds like the Dartford Warbler and linnet.

I visited the tunnel for the first time in 20 years this week. I had walked through it 20 years ago and was impressed by the restoration although some idiot was riding a loud motorcycle through it which somewhat spoilt the visit. I know all about the various incidents since. As I understand it the tunnel was supposed to be part of a Northern extension of the Cuckoo Trail which never happened due to lack of funding and also the sale of more of the land previously owned by ESCC and thus prevented the tunnel realising its full potential. Moving forward maybe opening it as part of the regular Heritage Open Days may be a possibility? sorry no idea how you do this but I've done several otherwise inaccessible sites via these schemes.
