This repair is a joke. You clean the rust off before you weld. Even the most skilled welder would have shit welds welding over that without any surface prep like you just did. And you cut out the old metal first then weld in new metal. You don’t just slap a plate over the old metal. Now it will rust even quicker.

Hey I am a DIY home builder, and I do a lot of framing by myself. The Almighty blessed each of us with an imagination, your doing a good job of using it. As long as it works and is sound there ain't nothing wrong with it. I have layed in bed a many a night wondering just how I was going to cut and raise my rafters the next day by myself and have found 3" deckmate screws are your best friend they are like another pair of hands. So I guess what I'm saying is I have done things similar to you and with a lot of help from The Almighty I havent failed yet. Keep on building!

I used to take my ford manual hubs apart every 3 winters and clean them and toss a new o ring in em sometimes. They are fantastic when easy to operate but any ford owner definitely carries some channel locks to turn those things in emergencies. 😂
