Haha, 5 and a half years later, I'm watching this like "My S9 with a 24mm f1.8 attached is probably smaller and lighter than your M4/3 camera from 2019."

This is a fantastic camera to use as an everyday carry with a small lens attached. I have an Olympus 17 mm f/2.8 pancake lens attached to mine. I also have a 14-42 pancake lens, but I don’t like the electronic zoom. But I might put it in my pocket in case I needed either a wider or a more telephoto lens when out-and-about, because it’s so small and light. If I wanted to use a bigger lens, or if I needed an EVF, then I would use one of my other m43 cameras. The big plus point of this camera is the way that all the controls can be reached by your right hand when you’re carrying it one-handed in your right hand. So you can bring it into action, adjust the settings and take the shot, all one handed. This wouldn’t work using the zoom lens, though. The colour/monochrome switch is great for rapidly switching to black and white for a particular shot. And if you use the raw+jpeg option, you still have a colour file to use back home, if you change your mind.

Hi Dave, as the weather sealing was irrelevant, the Lumix 20 f1.7 super tiny high quality image wise would be 1/3 size of the 20 1.4. Now that would be a small kit👍😀

I am off to Cambodia with the OM 12-40 and 40-150. Fantastically, compact lenses. I was looking at your Laowa 6mm review. Would you recomend an ultra wide lens for Temple photography? Also considering the Panasonic 9mm f1.7.
@DGriffGallery21 күн бұрын
I would go for the 9mm Lumix. In fact that's exactly what I did. the 6mm is such a specialist lens that the applications for it are quite limited. Whereas the 9mm is just right and would do well for you on your trip. Also it's much lighter than the Laowa and better optically. 😊👍

Thanks for this great advice! Actually never considered using the digital teleconverter on my OM-5. Most of the time I have my 12-100mm attached. Sometimes this is just too short, and the digital tele is an instant solution to extend the reach. I could assign it to the function button of the lens.

HiYa! Great review, lens ordered... (Blame You!) You mentioned owning the 8-25mm but not anymore? Could you please be so kind as to share why you do not have it in your kit anymore? I am planning to buy it next, but was kind of wondering why you would not keep it...? (If you did mention it before, you mentioned using wide primes..., and I have missed it I sincerely apologize!) Thanks!!
@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
Hello. A very good question which I asked of myself about 6 months ago and quickly reacquired one! Which now lives on my OM-1 and is my default lens! I had gone back to prime lenses because that's what I grew up with in the 70s and 80s. And whilst I still have and use a set regularly (at 9, 15, 20, 25, & 45mm) I found that when out walking the dog or hiking the hills the 8-25 was sorely missed 😊👍

@@DGriffGallery Thanks a million, have put in an order for the 8-25mm and the 40-150mm! Keep up the great work!!!!! Subbed & Thumbed-Up!! (I grew up in the same `dark ages` as you, so I know what you are talking about there..)

Hi, love your videos, so much I’m thinking of downsizing my kit. I’m an amateur that gets out when I can, currently have a Nikon Z8 and a few lenses but considering a move to the OM1 mark11. The smaller lighter bag is very appealing but unsure what to do. Possibly the Z8 is more camera than I need, is there such thing as having too much camera ?
@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
I used to use Nikon. I don't I think it's so much a case of too much camera just excessive weight and bulk for comparable results. After quite a few years with Olympus I could never see myself migrating to a larger system, and all of the professional work I have done in those years has been perfectly acceptable to my clients and myself. 😊👍

Many thanks, Rick! Sadly due to range of personal and family issues my video productivity has dropped off a lot in the last couple of years and whilst I'm hopeful of picking it up again next year I'm not sure when that might come about, perhaps by the summer. So I really appreciate you dipping into my back catalogue and really glad that you still find something to enjoy there. 😊👍

Thanks for taking me to places that I can no longer go to, great photos. The P mode on my Canon 80 D chooses a larger aperture than I do in AV mode, I usually choose f8. Is there a reason why you choose f5.6 ? Is it because you focus stack ?
@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
Hello Kevin, thanks so much for watching, really glad you enjoyed it. To answer your question the reason I choose that aperture is because using an M4/3 system means that I am at a full frame equivalent of f/11. This usually gives me the depth of field I need to avoid stacking, and also tends to correspond with the sweet spot of the lens, about one stop in from its wide aperture. 😊👍

Hi Dave, quick question. What Kase step-up adapter do you recommend for this 6mm lens? I.e., 58mm to what exactly? I've read that a larger size filter is needed to reduce vignetting . Thanks

Hello. My Kase series are all 77mm so I step up to that for all my lenses. Works fine 😊👍

Great video. Could you explain what a stop is? I get confused when people say the exposure should be plus one stop or down a stop. It's especially confusing with exposure compensation. Thanks
@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
Hello Mike. In the simplest terms a "stop" is an arbitrary expression for amending the amount of light entering the camera. Increasing exposure by a stop means you are doubling the light from its current amount. Reducing by a stop means halving. It's helpful when hearing about exposure to have a general grasp so you can follow along. But the easiest way to expose your images correctly is to use the camera's histogram along with the EVF or LCD. In modern cameras if it looks OK on the screen that's usually fine. In olden day when I was using film 40 years ago, stops were more important because you couldn't see what you were going to get in any given situation. Light meters helped to determine the average exposure, and then if there were bright highlights or dark shadows you would compensate by upping or lowering exposure by a stop or two. So the easy rule of thumb is this: see what looks about right on the camera. And then if there are dark shadows or bright highlights adjust accordingly to centre the histogram as best you can making sure that there are no peaks up against either end of the graph. You will rarely need to adjust exposure more than 2 stops up or 2 stops down. A range of 5 stops (2 under, the middle, and 2 above) is often the maximum you will work with when exposing a shot. Hope this is helpful, but it not there are some good resources on channels like Nigel Danson which will expand on this for you. It can be a complicated subject and beyond the scope of video comments to explain it in full, But I hope the general tips here are useful. 😊👍

It's a compelling lens indeed , which I seriously considered for all the reasons you mentionned. It all came down to what I needed the lens for. The fast 2.8 won over for its ultra fast focus, TC compatibility, retractable shade (a fantastic under rated feature when using a C-PL filter) for action shots in situations where light is a at a premium (like 1/100s at ISO 1600 @ f2.8). I use f2.8 quite often without hesitation, no regrets, but yes it is a efty chunk of glass and the f4 lens is a good compromise worthy of consideration if weight is a limiting factor (not to forget it's 1/2 the cost).

What is the temperature over there now? It seems cold but not snowing, right? Have some concern about the lens in harsh weather. And it's not rated as weather sealed.
@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
It's not too bad today. No wind, which also helps. As for your weather-sealing query it's not something I ever think about much. I don't think this one is sealed, but some of my other lenses aren't either. I'm just careful how I use them, but they all put in appearance in all weathers. I just don't leave them fully exposed to the elements for long periods. 😊👍

How would it be for photos in a sports hall covered with artificial light? I say this with the f4. It would be enough to raise the ISO a little. The camera I have is the OM1 mark 2. Thank you
@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
Hello, I can't give you an honest answer about your particular use case, as it's not my field of expertise. But I can be very confident in saying that ISO is your friend for this sort of thing, I use higher ISO a lot for my landscapes and it's just another tool in the box. My starting ISO for early morning work is 800, but I have no issue running it up to 1600 or even 2000 if necessary. Image quality is almost completely unaffected and processing tools can easily clean this sort of thing up if cleaning proves absolutely essential. 😊👍

@DGriffGalleryАй бұрын
Hello, thanks so much for subscribing, much appreciated. Hope I can keep you entertained. As to your query: I haven't used UV filters for 40 years. I always think it's a bad idea using lower quality optics in front of expensive glass. I'm quite lax about being careful with gear and have dropped many a lens and camera. Sometimes they break, sometimes not. I just see it as and occupational hazard. They're insured too. 😊👍

Lovely to see your local seacoast. I can imagine walking there almost every day, rain or shine, Winnie or no Winnie and photograph or no photograph. Showing us what has to come together to get a good shot is photographic education too. When I saw the camera on the tripod was the EM10 mark iv, I was delighted. A modest consumer camera being used to make wonderful images!
