A smartphone and cheap cameras need a lot of light otherwise your HD recording will only be 480p. It's because the small sensor on the cell phone can't process it or it doesn't get enough light. You can test it. Go out on a bright day, it doesn't have to be sunny, but it has to be nice and bright, film a quiet scene first in HD or 4k. Then go to your workshop and do a normal, quiet scene (do not pan or zoom).
