Thank you for sharing this precious concert. So many beautiful performances by several legendary artists back to back at the joint, quite the feast for the audience! Totally not jealous here (🤞🙃) I was moved from the moment Pavarotti sang his first line. But Paul Plishka’s magnificent Zaccaria shook me to the core, as of 58:00: absolutely glorious!

Of all the opera singers I worked with... Sam Ramey was the most professional, by far!
@wotan10950Ай бұрын
Glad to hear you worked well with him. Way back, before marriage and kids, I used to go backstage to meet the artists. Some were wonderful, some were cordial, some were tired. Ramey was nasty and obnoxious, albeit one of the greatest basses in history.

I will never understand how anyone could prefer Domingo's tense and forced sound to Pavarotti's golden, easy and clarion voice.
@zenonorth1193Ай бұрын
Chacun a son gout. I like both, but if I want to hear an operatic character, I listen to Domingo. If I want to hear Pavarotti, well...I listen to Pavarotti.
@paules3437Ай бұрын
@@zenonorth1193 I can acknowledge that Pav was probably not as good as a character on stage. He tried, but I guess he relied on his voice. It's that age-old question of are you listening for the voice or engaging in the onstage drama? I did hear some early Domingo that I found appealing, but in his later years, I felt like his voice was forced and a little tinny. In the 80's I took students to the Met to hear a matinee of Elisir d'Amore featuring Pav, but he basically stood there and sang. It seemed clear he didn't care too much about that perf, poss because it was billed, sort of, as a student matinee. Speaking of your opening phrase, are you familiar with the lyrics based on that, "Chacun à Bing's Goût" that some singer wrote to be performed at Bing's retirement or some kind of anniversary? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoPWnHZtfJt3nas
@zenonorth1193Ай бұрын
@@paules3437 Well, can't disagree that there is force behind Domingo's voice and sometimes he does sound a bit forced, but to my ears never strained. As for Pavarotti - if I want an unrestricted flow of glorious, golden tone - "he da man"! I hadn't heard about "Chacun a Bing's Gout" but will definitely follow up the link. I sang in 4 different productions of Die Fledermaus at Vancouver Opera, so I can't see, say, hear, or type the words "chacun a son gout" without hearing Strauss!

@@zenonorth1193 I've spent a lot of time in Vancouver over the past 10 years but not at the opera. I did hear Jaeden Izik-Dzurko at UVic on the island July '23. Sensational.

I LOVE these recordings of Roberta Peters' Queen of the Night!!! These are her best performances of this role!!! Even though she was a very lyric coloratura, she knew how to use her voice in a way to still make it sound very dramatic.
@spyserse22192 ай бұрын
I think she is very suitable for the Queen of the night . her voice is gorgeous but lacks warmth, with a clear chill. Her skills can highlight the shining decorative parts of the character, and her facial expressions and body movements can match the dark dirtiness of the Queen of the night. If her volume were a little louder, it would be even more suitable.
