I came to know her rather well, and admired her creative way of describing the change in her voice as she told Charlie Rose. At a master class at Ithaca College, from which she received an honorary doctoral degree at the urging of longtime conductor and pioneer recording director Gustave Haenschen, she told the students and School of Music faculty that her voice had "evolved" from lyric coloratura to a lyric soprano. She was also quite candid about colleagues she disrespected--chief among them Leonard Warren ("a big baby who ordered everyone except Richard Tucker around during rehearsals. He respected Tucker and also knew how volatile Richard could be"), and Jussi Bjoerling ("Recording him with him was a nightmare because he drank to excess. In the Rigoletto quartet, he stood so close to his microphone that the engineers couldn't hear the rest of us."

This was absolutely enchanting. I never realized what a musician Ms. Peters was, in addition to that gorgeous voice. Regarding "Mia speranza adorata…Ah non sai qual pena sia,” I believe all of the high notes in the concert aria are original; i.e., written by Mozart, not interpolated by Ms. Peters. Mozart's sister-in-law, Josepha Weber, who was the first "Queen of the Night," obviously had a phenomenally high range and Mozart wrote several concert arias for her, including this one sung gloriously by Ms. Peters. In addition, I'm not sure I've ever heard "Deh vieni non tardar" sung more beautifully than Peters in this recital. Thanks so much for posting this!

Thank you for sharing this precious concert. So many beautiful performances by several legendary artists back to back at the joint, quite the feast for the audience! Totally not jealous here (🤞🙃) I was moved from the moment Pavarotti sang his first line. But Paul Plishka’s magnificent Zaccaria shook me to the core, as of 58:00: absolutely glorious!
