Ace had everything. Lots of personality, a great guitar tone and tasty guitar licks. He also does not try to rush things all the time and plays much cleaner than people gives credit for.

Ace Frehley will always be, to me, the guitarist of KISS, at least in its classic sense. They chose well picking him. People give him a hard time about not being more of a super virtuous on the guitar...like he wasn't a real musician. That's like saying Chuck Berry wasn't the father of Rock and Roll because he didn't play like Eddie Van Halen. Ace has a simple, muscular, tough sounding playing style that was perfect for early KISS. That makes him a good musician in my book.
