Its a fine, on-the-face argument to say Britain should not have gone into WW1...however, that argument is disingenuous at several points: saying that intervening in the war lead to the Russian Revolution, Stalin, etc. doesn't make sense, because that Revolution would have likely happened regardless of Britain's involvement...do they really think by NOT being involved that those events wouldn't have happened? And the events in India and S. Africa were all happening with or without Britain's involvement in WW1. Is the logical conclusion of their thesis that by not losing 100s of 1000s of men in the Somme and Ypres...that those same men could instead have helped maintain a better hold of the Empire? That doesn't make any sense at all. But the people arguing against Britain's involvement in WW1 conveniently ignore the 800 lb. gorilla in the room: Germany was a young, bucking new power, and it was in DIRECT competition with the British Empire, and to think they could have just stayed out of that mess, knowing Germany might win, is ludicrous. England remembers very well what a Continental Europe run by one militant power was like, and it's why they committed to fighting at Waterloo to crush that power (France). Had Germany won, it would have been a return to that same scenario they had to endure thru a mere 100 years before. And as an American...I really appreciate MacMillan's comment about the Kaiser and Germany's meddlesome actions before and during the war...it was this same meddlesomeness that lead to their outreach attempts with the govt. of Mexico, which led to the Zimmerman letter and Am's entrance to the war.
