First time I went to Scotland via the A74, as I passed the "Welcome to Scotland" sign, greeted with a speed camera van on the first bridge. Great welcome, total pricks.

I’m not too convinced by the Kelvinside accent. And that’s the unmistakeable sound of an HST passing at 125mph at the end. ScotRail didn’t operate HSTs until around 15 years after this ad came out, and they can’t run them at top speed. Still, it’s a very funny advert.
@jvgreendarmok Жыл бұрын
I don't know how you can tell it's passing 125mph by the sound, or if that was a joke, but I think the sound of an HST pelting past is a standard shorthand for fast train journeys between cities.
@nkt1 Жыл бұрын
@@jvgreendarmok We know the lengths of Class 43 power cars and Mk3 carriages, so we can accurately calculate the speed from the sound. Or, we can watch videos of HSTs travelling at full speed, and record the time from power car to power car. The sets in the videos I watched took around 4 seconds, as depicted here.

It's not supposed to sound like the exact train to the (very very) few who would know. It's supposed to be the most recognisable train sound to the mass public watching the advert. Having said that, I admire your knowledge, sir. Hats off! Also, I agree about the Kelvinside accent. It's been a while since I was there, but it doesn't sound quite right to me?
@nkt1 Жыл бұрын
@@ismayb754 True, most (older) people in the UK are probably familiar with the HST’s distinctive ‘zing’, which it lost some years ago, when the engines were replaced. Funnily enough, I commented just the other day on a Van der Valk programme on here. It had a shot a Dutch electric train departing from a station, dubbed with the unmistakeable scream of the (diesel) HST accelerating from rest. The accent definitely isn’t quite correct. Stanley Baxter springs to mind when I think of the Kelvinside accent.
@ismayb754 Жыл бұрын
@@nkt1 I think over 99% of older people watching this advert back in the day would not have given a second thought to whether the train sound effect sounded like the right one for the train that goes between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It's just a sound being used for an effect, it's not supposed to actually represent the actual train.

Been trying to find this for years! I was only about twelve when it was aired, but something just stuck in my mind. If a cruel sport is defined as something that causes unnecessary distress to an animal, then by definition we would ban the largest participation sport in the UK, angling. A sport that campaigned for improvement in water quality during the 1960s and 70s when not many were interested. The people responsible for massive increases in freshwater fish numbers would have their sport removed. What would happen to fish numbers then? Why have the numbers of hares decreased since coursing was banned? Let's have urban social elites make rules for communities and lifestyles they don't understand, what could possibly go wrong?
