Good question! They are very closely related. There is even a whole game genre called 'simulations' (Farming Simulator, Flight Simulator, etc.). The difference: Where a simulation's main purpose is to mimic reality, a game's primary purpose is to entertain. An example of this is that games have short term goals and long term goals (objectives, quests), a sense of progression (gaining levels, improving your character) and a storyline. I could not find peer reviewed conference or journal papers for simulations which can help me to differ from the serious games. I have another question related to the term "DIGITAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING". Would you provide some insight on this term? I feel like the digital experiential learning could be considered as a parent branch of serious games, simulation games, etc. Would you also provide some peer reviewed conference or journal papers if you have or find any for Digital Experiential Learning as well?
