There is a lot of footage I wish we could see separately, especially that basketball game. This was amazing.

I just love "Get Ready"!!! One of the grooviest Black Music songs ever composed! The White counterpart: "Music" by John Miles. Or Queen's "I want it all". Or "Nightshift" by the Commodores! OOooops, sorry: not to leave out the J - Settes, of course! Cheers!

Am I wrong for saying that the dance style came from the JSettes but the the phrase Jsetting came from the gay clubs. It wasn’t well taken to see men doing stand routines out in the streets. Over time it became common. A better choice word would be taboo

Why is Chloe stunting in this video like she doesn’t know the origin of 5 star? Talmbout she wasn’t on the team then... girl it debuted your captain year. You probably the one that named it!🤣🙄
@tamirmickens893 жыл бұрын
It definitely LOOKS like the one you’re talking about, but 5 star is the one with pants that debuted fall 09 with Ketta.

One of the cleanest and most well-executed tryout demonstration performances of all time. I've been to at least 12 J-Sette open tryouts since the late 90s & Dom would make Afrachanna proud.

Pleasure Principle is my all time favorite Janet song and video because she's the only person in the entire video and I love her simple hair and classic black jeans/shirt. It shows Janet in her most purest form. I wished they danced to PP on the field.
@valentino44113 жыл бұрын
Dom, I went to school around the same time as Afrachanna and Aquita and I know they are so proud to have you as one of the captains. I used to watch them practice and you have such incredible form and power. The perfect blend of technique and bucking skills. The true epitome of a J-Sette.

Southern dance styles are so different from Northerners. It took a while for me to accept what it means to Buck. My mother and grandmother are from the South, and maybe it's a generational thing, but they weren't having it. We call it coochie popping. It's seen as a degrading form of dance. I studied dance at the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, the top dance school in Philadelphia for African Americans, and never ever, did we buck. Whenever my favorite Majorette dance team start bucking, I'm like Do that ish, 🤣. I know my mother and grandmother are turning over in their graves like, Dear Lord help her, lol. It really is frowned upon where I come from. What helped me not look at it in a negative light was seeing the whole person and not one movement in their dance. When I say whole person, I'm talking mental, intellectual, spiritual... I'm like, these ladies are bad. They are more than their dance.
@JaySmith-wo3di3 жыл бұрын
Regional bias definitely plays a huge role in how people view certain dance styles - but it's rooted in something deeper. I'm really surprised about your grandma and mother's opinion. When a lot of black families moved North during the great migration, many wanted to dissociate themselves from the south. Many even stopped listening to the blues due to it being seen as "country and low class". Who set the society norm that "bucking" is degrading? It sure wasn't black people. But we accepted it and then began policing it even more than they did. It still happens today. There's ALWAYS someone on a j sette video being demeaning and using the SU Dolls as the epitome of classy. I'm glad you saw the light though - many don't.

I see everybody saying what their favorite uniform is. Tiger suit all day. It emphasizes the junk, even if u don’t have much. I also like the white pants with the fringes on the side. When they are shaking those fringes are moving. I criticize the J-settes pretty hard. But I’m glad the young lady that said even the criticism is motivation to perform better. That’s exactly what that is...motivation to do better.
