Great job explaining each step of this fly and it sure looks buggy. I purchased my first vise in 1989 and made many hundreds of flies and then I started to dedicate all my time working and spending time with my child. 20 years later if it wasn't for KZbin I would have been lost because of all the new materials available now. Thankfully people like you take the time to explain everything. Thanks for doing so.

I love it. I tie all my stimis on it. I go with a firehole 718 for other big dries as it has a bigger hook gape, but the 1270's work great for stimmies

Love this tie, gonna need to tie some for next years trip out west. But I have a story to tell, so I just was starting out flyfishing that spring, getting more and more comfortable, reading a million books , haha. Then , one morning I was on a river you know well (about 25 or more years ago). There was a crazy hatch of Caddis flies. I switched to one I happened to have in my measly fly box and dressed it up and saw a rise right to the opposite bank. I’m not liking that long cast but I gave it a go. After hooking a bush behind me several times lol but getting v my fly back I laid it out a couple feet of this fish and he sucked it up. I set the hook without breaking it off and after what seemed like hours I netted an 18” brown and the first one ever on a dry on my local waters. So, after that I was think crap, this will happen all the time now. Yeah, right. No more big dudes up feeding years and years later. But the bottom line is: I feel exactly how you said it , it just isn’t productive in our neck of the woods to fish a dry unless , the Trout Gods are in your favor these days. Lol. Great tie yet again Gary. Gonna have a bunch of these in my fly box heading west. Thx yet again.

Great tie Gary! I like the way you tie yours. Thats also great that you are telling newbies how to do different techniques and the ‘why’s’ . One of the things that fairly new tiers will think about while tying a conventional fly pattern is how they can innovate and create slightly different versions of say ,the ones that are in the instructional video or books. I always like the way you explain as you go! I wish I had your videos when I was learning. Take care and tightlines! Also, how was your trip to Maine?

Nice bug! I have been looking for a good realistic stone fly. Have you ever tried tying left handed? I just tried tied it this week because I thought using my right hand to hold the different materials to the hook would make it easier to accurately hold them in place. I think I am going to stick with it. Turns out wrapping thread around a hook isn’t that difficult.
@adkflytying
@adkflytying Ай бұрын
No, but for no other reason than I've never even thought about it. That is a good point though, about the materials. I'll give that a try. You never know

How I do it is I tie lead wire to each side of the abdomen so it's flat and bit wider then I use bright yellow thread and tie the vynil packed flat side up over it to create the abdomen
@adkflytying
@adkflytying Ай бұрын
That's good stuff. I used to do the exact same and still do for some presentation flies. I don't for these because these are some of the main flies that I actually fish so I try to get as many done as I can. That wider profile is definitely more like what a stone has

I spent a day perfecting braided tails years ago and they looked magnificent in the box. The problem is that the braiding restricts the tail movement to almost zero. A damsel swims with its entire body and you're better off using a plain marabou tail on a short shaft hook.
@adkflytying
@adkflytying Ай бұрын
I can definitely see what you mean and you're right about how they swim. They don't seem to care too much as this is definitely one of my most productive still water flies

In my opinion I think you did an excellent job on this old fly. In finishing up the Head if you want a cleaner head wrap the last hackel around the thread and pull it back into the hackels and whip Finnish. Go ahead and give it a try. Another way, in addition to making a peacock rope as you did, to improve the durability of the peacock body, is to add a coat of hard as nails or similar, on the shank where you intend to make the body, prior to winding the peacock, in effect “ glueing it in place. At this point, I secure at the head, cut the thread and place to dry the body. I make at least 6 bodies in a session. By the time you make the sixth one the first one should be dry and ready for the next steps. I have found adding this step significantly improves the durability! I tie a very similar pattern using Mallard flank for the wing! Thanks!

I know it may sound crazy but when I use fur that has long guard hairs that are too long or I don’t like, I’ll pull them out put them in a stacker and then put them back into my bundle. It may not be for everyone but that’s what works for me. I can’t believe I’ve been tying flies for 52 years now! I’ve tied commercially for about 28-30 years and now I’m getting a little older and there is a burnout factor! I not only tied for 4 shops and I also built fly rods and tied flys out of my house. I remember when Coz and Paul Whemer opened the Blue Wing Outfitters shop in Hancock, NY I was the guest fly tier for the weekend and Charlie Meck came Sunday for book signing. Paul and I were fishing on Spring Creek in Bellefonte, Pa just before they were scheduled to open and he asked me if I could help them out with tying flies to fill their boxes before they open. I told Paul of course I’d help him and Coz out. Well, Paul and I sat on the bank and got a pad out of my truck to right down some patterns to tie for them. When I got done writing I had 128 dozen flies to tie! That wasn’t the bad part but when he said he needed them in 3 weeks I was shocked! I promised I would have them done and I sure get them all done! Thank God I could get some time off from my law enforcement job to get them done! It kind of started for me like that at Pinewood Flies with Ray Grandner in Pine Valley, NY. I was tying so many flies that I retired and started working for Ray in the fly shop. I can’t even tell you how many flies I tied a day for him in the shop besides sales and building rods! I’d love to do it all over again if I were younger because I love tying flies and designing flies! I only had one guy steal and copy my patterns and they were some killer steelhead flies! The shop was Bill’s Hooks in Dunkirk, NY on Canadaway Creek. Oh well, I love your flies and videos so keep up the good work. God Bless.

Yes! I’ve been watching every possible KZbin video made about flyfishing for Atlantic’s up in Cape Breton Island, The Margaree River mostly and you nailed it. Their go-to dry flies are bomber variations mostly. Will be busy filling a box of all types of salmon flies this summer. And also yes,The New Flyfisher has two very informative vids on flyfishing the Margaree. Full of tips and where and how to improve your chances on the rivers up there.
