Very cool indeed! But why doesn't the salt water mix with the fresh water by diffusion. It looks like two separate phases!?

I don't get a thing.. if you move the bar to the bottom, how can the fresh water move uphill? I'd expect it moved downhill as well as salty water..

I think it's because salty water is more dense. If at rest, it's at the bottom and is stable, but if tilted it is pulled by its weight downwards, while fresh water is pushed upwards due to buoyancy effect I believe.

@@alexkrochak7197 buoyancy effect.. what does it mean? I'm ok with the denser fluid, that initially is at the bottom, going downwards..

@@Federico1871 You could also see it as the heavier liquid pushing the lighter liquid upwards as it moves down.

Hi, I am giving a lecture on viscous flows, May I use your video for illustration? It is very, very instructive and I would really like to show this to the students. Kind regards

Has to do with mixing of viscosities, movement, and angle, but I don't know why it always moves upwards in precise intervals. Gases do this well, and most of our atmosphere is gas, so it's a layering reaction, and if you add the liquids together too slowly it won't react the same. Resonance works in a similar way, but produces different results depending on what kind of material you use and the texture of such.

Grae Worster I was conducting the same experiment using Phenolphthalein as coloring material but i could not get clear separation as it is getting diffused.

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. An unbelievably simple solution for such a complex matter. I've never thought that kelvin helmholtz instability can be so easily visualized. Elegant.
