This is the last chapter included in the sermon on the mount where Jesus moves from one topic to the next in quick succession. When looking at this structure in Matthew 7, it is quite clear to see that the context of verses 13-14 which speaks about the narrow and the wide gates are not speaking in light of asking, seeking and knocking in verse 7. The matter of the topic of verse 7 was closed in verse 12. The topic of verse 7 is distinctly different from verses 1-6, for instance. This is why verse 7 isn’t seen as being in the context of Judging others, which is how the chapter starts out. This preacher is sadly mistaken. This is what happens when one fails to exegete scripture by its proper context, style, structure and such.
