When she was young, she had been taught by a Chinese coach. It seems that all conversations there were conducted in Chinese. She also said in the past that Chinese table tennis terms are written in Chinese characters, which makes it easier to grasp their meanings. Japanese and Chinese are completely different in pronunciation and grammar, but each Chinese character has its own meaning, so Japanese who use Chinese characters may be able to understand them to some extent.

@@代表被怒役平社員 All Japanese writing uses "Kanji" (old Chinese characters) for word roots, and then adds endings in phonetic Japanese letters ("Hiragana"). Chinese doesn't have those endings, but the character meanings are often similar, so this makes sense. A Japanese speaker could quickly learn any small differences in meaning. And learning "terms" is much easier than learning sentence grammar (which is very different ).

@@tedc9682 Until around the 18th century, Japanese warriors and leaders were fluent in ancient Chinese and were able to communicate in writing with the Chinese (Ming and Qing), Korean dynasties, and Vietnamese of the time. Even today, Japanese high schools require students to study ancient Chinese literature and poetry. Many Japanese also respect ancient Chinese philosophers, and many of their books are still sold in bookstores.
