@bulbheadmyass The "mainstream churches " removed some of the original lyrics for fear of offending the more sensitive of the congregation the omitted lyrics are fnding there way back into the fold in the "charismatic or pentacostal" churches

No he didn't...he only wrote the words. It's a traditional EFIK song of lamentation from Calabar, Nigeria. He heard the captured slaves singing it, and wrote his own words. But he most certainly DIDN'T compose the tune.

A great movie ... if only Hollwyood would make stuff like this instead of the crud they deal in.

gonkiluagon: Actually he DIDN'T compose the song, he only wrote the lyrics! It is a traditional EFIK song from NIGERIA. During his involvement in slavery, he heard the captured slaves singing the song in our native language. When he renounced slavery and became a Christian, he wrote the words to the NATIVE TUNE, and then started his anti-slavery campaign, but it is a TRADITIONAL EFIK SONG, with Anglicized. lyrics

This video and the several most recent comments have truly impacted me. Heavy, but good; sad, but blessed; and a bit overwhelmed, but empowered&(like "regas95 - crying") I have alot to share on this please excuse the ramble... Accidentially [but not by chance, obvious2 me] I landed here, I really needed to. No doubt to me {I'm sure Mr Newton would agree} who actually wrote A.G. As4me -His work oftens come with most pwer when though other people. I've gained insight & call2action THx all!

An amazing transformation that God gave Mr. Newton who in turn gave the world this song for the ages. If George Wallace. God's forgiveness is very powerful and always there. It is our forgiveness of those who hurt us that is so difficult. bt
