St George went into this game witout "5 or 6" players. I assume it was for NSW (or 'City') team selection?

One of the greatest finishes to a Grand-final that I've *ever* seen. It's a complete joke that this match was played *before* the women's Grand-final, and was therefore witnessed by less people in the stadium. Every lover of the sport of rugby-league needs to watch this match

Perhaps a bit of karma with the disallowed goal as Balmain had a goal disallowed at Redfern in the last game of the previous season - Balmain lost the game by a point and as a result missed the semis. Ken Wilson was a champion - one of my favourite players. Although I don’t like Souths I loved watching Ziggy Niszczot and Terry Fahey. This game had the year’s Dally M player Rocky Laurie and the Rothman’s Medalist Geoff Bugden.

Dawson's now been convicted as well as for other sex offences with minors. He'll die in jail, where he belongs. There players were treated like gods back in the day, subsequently they became drunk on their own importance and felt they were untouchable. (some, not all, some went on to distinguish themselves after football). I met many drunken ex-football heroes in a career in Policing, and always got the 'do you know who I am' attitude. Edit: I had John Maguire (70's Cronulla Sharks prop) as my maths teacher in high school. A lovely guy and one of nature's gentleman. I was saddened to hear he passed away, earlier this year.

Just came from watching a 1981newtown st George game. 1 play the ball from that game had more passes than 2 sets of 6 from this modern version of what was once a realy good game. No wonder I stopped watching footy 30 years ago. What a peice of sht they turned it onto.
@eddy2fast2602 жыл бұрын
This version of the game was fantastic. Winning scrums against the feed. Throwing the ball around. A scrum won against the feed has it pack down again in today's version. Its so stupid they allowed it to be fed to the Lock. Haven't watched footy for must be 30 years as this currant version is a joke. Guess I will be watching these golden oldies till they right the wrong.

For some reason in 1981 I followed the season very closely as a kid. My Sharks started well but faded as they season went on, even though regular centre Steve Rogers had a brilliant season winning Dally M as lock forward. Easts dominated from the start and everyone thought they would win. Losing this game to Newtown was quite the upset. In the end the Eels were deserved winners with their new legion of young backline stars.
@MERCURYSUNSET2 жыл бұрын
Yep Steve had a high watermark year in 1981 , also as Dally M player of the year , and Captain of the year . He also Captained Australia against France that year too.

Had the privilege of playing under coach Matto when he gave me a run in the 2006 Jim Beam Cup after pulling me out from park footy. I remember having to win the last few games to just make the top 8 and ended making the GF against the Sydney Bulls. Matto gave me a spot on the bench for the GF as a winger. Forever grateful for that opportunity. Thanks Matto.

It was Newtown who buggered St. George's 1973 season [ the year before ]. Took the pre-season off St. George in the final with a Ken Wilson conversion goal from the side-line on the full-time whistle, and then they eliminated St. George in the semis of the premiership in extra-time.

@@poitor5915 Indeed. You are correct. I would not mind seeing some of that stuff again. Pre-80s. But there was a fire in the ABC's Gore Hill facilities at one time. Purportedly it annihilated much, if not all, of their rugby league television tapes. I'd love to see all that 1970s minor premiership stuff, much of which the ABC televised live and not just delayed telecast. Balmain versus Easts, 1971. And Newtown 12 beats Balmain 10 in 1976, even though I was an ardent Balmain supporter. Even if to just to relive the angst. And so on.

This might well have been the match which resulted in what they called the differential scrum penalty whereby a scrum penalty was no kick for goal permitted and which was invoked in 1980 and was a rule which went on for years after. That they did is by-the-by now but I think there still exists a version of it to this day.

Thinking back it was perhaps not this match, but a similar match WON on scrum penalties that same year.
