My favorite song… no question! This made me fall in love with his music when I first saw him in Steamboat Colorado while I was on vacation something like 15 years ago. He’s incredible

My guitar teacher says that the thumb going over the neck is bad.
@cryotimber
@cryotimber 10 жыл бұрын
Did he expound? There are a lot of famous guitar players who play with their thumb over the neck. They use it to either fret the E string or mute it.
@EpicNEd
@EpicNEd 10 жыл бұрын
Lunar Topaz He says it limits movement. He said it's much easier to move from open position to 7th position of you place your thumb on the neck, not over. I tested it out too and it works much better (especially for switching bar chords). I think famous guitarists do it because of either bad habits they've learned young, or they have monster hands. I have very small hands (but size 12 feet, lol) so I find it difficult to go over the neck like the man in the video. Do you find it easier for your thumb to go over the neck?
@cryotimber
@cryotimber 10 жыл бұрын
I have average sized hands and only do this if I need to honestly, there are a lot of times when I need to mute the E string because of the style I play, and I either use my middle finger or my thumb. I know John Mayer uses his thumb and he's an astonishing guitar player, but he also has monster hands so, haha

Beware when _anybody_ attempts to push a subjective matter as absolute. Do what is comfortable. I would catch myself doing it sometimes and then try to 'correct' it because I was told the same thing...... But then I realized I couldn't do whatever I was doing as well as before, even with forced practice. Seeing some of the guitar greats ignoring that thumb-over rule only solidified my own resolve that I should do what works for me..... I mean, it sure worked for them, right? :)
@EpicNEd
@EpicNEd 8 жыл бұрын
He said this because we play classical guitar and having your thumb over the neck shows bad technique because it decreases your mobility.
