Was Alexander the Great's vast empire foretold many years before it became a reality? Was Alexander himself aware that his conquests fulfilled Biblical prophecies? What happened to the huge territory he controlled after he died? The prophet Daniel, who wrote his book from 605 to 530 B.C., predicted Alexander would head a world power around 200 years before it happened (see Daniel 2, 7, 8 and 11). In Daniel 2 his empire is described as a belly and thighs of bronze (brass) in King Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Daniel 2:31 - 32, 39). In Daniel 7, it is described as looking like a Beast (Leopard) with four heads. In Daniel 8, Alexander's Greek empire is symbolized by a male (he) goat with a large horn growing between his eyes. Then the he-goat became very great. And when he was strong, the great horn was broken. And in its place there came up the appearance of four horns toward the four winds of the heavens . . . and the shaggy goat is the KING OF GREECE (Daniel 8:8, 21, see also verses 1 to 7). In 323 B.C., at the height of his power, Alexander controlled 2.01 million square miles (about 5.2 million square kilometers) of territory (3.49% of the world's land area)! Did he know? Was Alexander, during his illustrious military career, aware he was fulfilling Biblical prophecy through his conquests? The short answer to this fascinating question is YES! The Jewish historian Josephus reveals that he became aware of his prophetic role when he visited Jerusalem after conquering both Tyre and Gaza in 332 B.C. "And when he (Alexander) had given (Jerusalem's) high priest his right hand, the priests ran along by him, and he came into the city. And when he went up into the temple, he offered sacrifice to God . . . "And when the Book of Daniel was showed him wherein Daniel declared that one of the Greeks should destroy the empire of the Persians, he supposed that himself was the person intended. And as he was then glad, he dismissed the multitude for the present . . ." (Antiquities of the Jews, Book 11, Chapter 8). Alexander, when he read the prophecies of Daniel 8:3 - 8, believed (correctly) that it applied to him. He understood he was the "he-goat from the west" (Daniel 8:5) who, with lightning-fast fury (verse 6), would destroy the power of the ram (the Medo-Persian Empire, verse 7). He accomplished this momentous task one year later when, in 331, he achieved a decisive victory over Persia's King Darius in the battle of Gaugamela (Arbela)! Daniel and Zechariah both prophesied about the rise of the Macedonian Empire out of Greece. Daniel's prophecies are so direct that some scholars have tried to move his historical lifetime closer to Alexander's to explain their accuracy. The non-eschatological prophecies in Daniel have proved so reliable that some critics have tried to post-date his writing, even though copious literary, historical, and biblical factors point to a date of writing in the sixth century B.C. Daniel wrote in the sixth century BC, hundreds of years before Alexander lived. Zechariah, writing sometime between 520 and 470 B.C., was also well before Alexander’s rise to power. Zechariah wrote between 520 and 470 BC. Alexander was born more than 100 years later, in 356 BC. Alexander lived only 32 years, but in that time, he led armies throughout the known world-from his home in Macedonia (Greece), through Persia, Asia Minor, Egypt, and throughout the Mediterranean Sea region. He had no heirs, but his legacy lived on through the establishment of Hellenism-the Greek culture. Greek became the official language in all his conquered areas and Greek culture was required or encouraged in those areas and surrounding regions. For 300 years the Greek influence reigned. In 63 BC the Romans conquered Jerusalem. In Daniel 2, Daniel interprets King Nebuchadnezzar's dream, saying there would be four empires to rule the known world. History records the Babylonian (King Nebuchadnezzar's current rule), Medo-Persian, Greek, then Roman empires. The Medo-Persian empire overtook the Babylonian empire in 539 BC. Daniel received a vision of the Medo-Persian empire's destruction. God names the Medo-Persian and Greek empires in Daniel 8:20-21 and 10:20-11:4. In Chapter 8 a ram with two horns represents the Medes and Persians. The Greeks are represented by the goat with one horn (one king, Alexander) which came from the west. The goat kills the two-horned ram, but its single horn is broken off at its greatest time. The reality that occurred was Alexander the Great dying at age of thirty-two, at the height of his power. The goat's horn is replaced with four horns. Alexander’s legacy was quickly made, briefly lived, and has lasted to this day. Born in 356 B.C. and dying in 344 B.C., he only reigned for 13 years - the vast majority of which he spent outside of his home state of Macedonia. His legendary conquest of nearly the entire known world resulted in one of the largest empires in ancient history. Alexander overthrew the entire Persian Empire: Asia Minor, Persia, Egypt, Syria, Phoenicia, and everything in between, including Israel. Alexander died undefeated in battle but without a clear heir, which led to the division of his empire among four of his generals. Although Alexander’s empire split, the Hellenism he spread continued. Greek became the universal language, and Greek culture was either required or encouraged in all parts of the divided empire. Israel changed hands between the Ptolemaic and Seleucid kingdoms. Israel later gained its independence from 167-63 B.C., a time referred to as the Hasmonean Period and recorded in the apocryphal books of 1 and 2 Maccabees. The end of this period was marked by the Roman conquest of Jerusalem in 63 B.C. Daniel prophesies that the great king's kingdom would be broken into four parts (also Daniel 11:4). This is precisely what happened to Alexander's kingdom. God used Daniel to tell the future about Alexander the Great. He also told Daniel that the Israelites would return to the Promised Land, which happened during the time of Nehemiah and Ezra. Zechariah tells, in Chapter 9 and beyond, the path Alexander would take through Syria. He prophesies that Alexander would not harm Jerusalem and history tells us that Alexander recalled a dream as he marched to Jerusalem. He stopped his army and went with the priests to the temple to offer gifts. He treated the Jews with kindness. It's clear that God gave visions of the future to His prophets that included the influence of Alexander the Great

Are you blind? Pella, Greece existed before you Slavs originated in Ukraine. It seems that Hellenic History, its artifact, achievements, and history is under perpetual attack by either the jealous envy of other nations who seek to wipe out the Greek contributions to not only Western Civilization, but the entire world, or they are ludicrously attempting to appropriate Greek history as their own, e.g., FRYOM's ridiculous stance that the Macedonians of antiquity weren't Greeks. Obviously, they know that their propaganda is wholly untruthful as any neutral academic scholar on the History of Macedon would know. The district of Macedonia took its name from the Macedonian people, who in turn owe their name to Macedon, who according to Hesiod was the son of Zeus and Thyia, Deucalion's daughter. Hesiod makes Magnes and Macedon brothers, cousins of Graecus, sons of Zeus, and grandchildren of Deucalion, the mythological progenitor of all Greeks. Was there a Macedonian dialect, certainly there was, but it's a dialect emanating from the Ancient Greek Language, as the Macedonians always insisted that they were of Greeks. If Alexander the Great weren't a Greek, why then was his official office title "The General of Greece?" Subsequent to the united Greek Alliance in liberating the Greeks of Asia Minor and holding the Persian Empire accountable for their atrocities in the Greek mainland, notably the burning of the Parthenon. If Alexander and his fellow Macedonians weren't Greek, then why after defeating the Persians at the battle of the Granicus River did Alexander, in dedication to the city's Greek Goddess Athena 300 suites of Persian armor, with the inscription: Alexander son of Philip and the Greeks, except the Spartans, from the barbarians who live in Asia." With impeccable humility; he wrote, not the Macedonians, but of ALL THE GREEKS, except the Spartans who refused to join this Pan-Hellenic campaign which victoriously was ostensibly avenging past Persian atrocities, sacrileges, and as a savior of the Greeks from Persian slavery. And why, after the Greek victory in the battle of Gaugamela, wherein the Great Persian King Darius left the field of battle a coward leaving his wife and children behind to be taken, prisoner. Alexander, however, treated the Queen Mother with civility, leaving the royal Persian family not only unmolested but allowed them to continue to live in their own quarters in the same manner of royalty, which they had prior to being captured. The Persian Queen Mother came to respect Alexander's kindness in such a great manner that upon his death, she died six days later of a broken heart. The only request Alexander made to the Queen Mother was to ensure that her family learn to speak Greek, which they did indeed do. This is a Macedonian who isn't any less Greek than any Athenian, Spartan, Theban, Cretan, or any other Hellene? This is not a Slavic Macedonian, but indeed a Geek one. I too am of Macedonian/Greek ancestry. The same flag that Philip of Macedonia, Alexander, as well as those before them still flies in Greek Macedonia, the Vergina Sun on a Blue Field. When I first visited Thessalonica, my father's birthplace, my heart almost burst out of my chest when I laid my eyes upon the same flag that Philip and Alexander carried into battle.
