Thank you @CANHR for making this video as well as everything else you do! I use the resources and information from the website on a regular basis! I have been taking care of my grandmother for well over 10 years (she’s 91 now) putting her on Medi-Cal and IHSS. It was then I was introduced to the complex world of Medi-Cal as well as the frustration of navigating thru getting her into a program *WITHOUT* a share of cost! It took me quite some time to figure it all out but it was well worth it. The benefit that came from navigating this frustrating situation is that I now understand the basics of how to help seniors enroll with medi-cal and over the years have helped countless people apply and obtain both medical and IHSS. My grandma lives in a 55+ apartment complex and her neighbors see me over here everyday and over time they began asking me for help. One of the most frustrating things I experience is trying to get people into the ABD FPL program (or any medical program..) is $600 consider to be “Maintenance needs” as if this is somehow a reasonable reflection of cost of living expenses in 2024 (I believe that this $600 has not been adjusted or changed since 1984). So in that case, just like the video says, I will usually always have to help them obtain private insurance and sometimes even dental, and *then* they will qualify for that program without the SOC. (but then I just cancel The private insurance after lol.) I am helping an incredible 92year old woman sign up for medi-cal and calfresh (and eventually IHSS) who has income of *$2,090* and that is considered “too much” to qualify to get into the ABD FPL program and would therefore give her an ABSURD share of cost. And I get around that by getting private insurance and then canceling it. I am so frustrated by the fact that Medi-Cal has never adjusted the maintenance needs from $600 if they were to do this there wouldn’t be a need to buy private insurance nor would the vast majority of people have a SOC because their income wouldn’t be considered too high. The reason this becomes so convoluted and unfair mainly stems from the fact that this damn maintenance needs ($600) hasn’t been adjusted in well over 30 freaking years!! Grrrrrrrr it makes me so angry that I write to my congressman and reps because I want it to change. Anyways, sorry that was a long rant but I really appreciate all the information CANHR puts out. 😊

Thanks to all of you. I am applying for my father in the IHSS. My question deals with share of cost. You people stated that my father could say he is paying me share of cost when he would not be. Is that legal to do? Thanks for all info.

Question: I understood that if someone moved into an approved, ALW accepting facility that they would lose ALL of their Social Security benefit monthly payment, except for perhaps $100 allowance. Or am I getting confused with what happens when someone goes into a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), which MediAid/MediCal pays for in full? (all of this of course assumes low-income conforming with no-share-of-cost limitations for program eligibility).

Mandating against vaccine requirements for visitors is not a good idea. I see so many visitors at mom's facility with masks down around their chins. If it weren't for the facility vaccine requirements, the residents would all be coming down with COVID. In fact the staff, nurses etc. often take their masks off, or wear them under their noses despite being "medical professionals"

If you file a complaint and receive a finding of no deficiency found I suggest strongly filing a FOIA request to CMS ( Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). States submit the full survey/complaint report to CMS. I was beyond stunned by how little the full report addressed. How much information giving in my complaints never was investigated nor even mentioned in their reports. ER documents, Adult Protective SErvices report, etc were giving to my State DHHS who I submitted my complaints to...they never referenced this information although these supported the neglect complaints.

I understand SS paperwork (must?) be submitted in January-March (Coverage starts in July).. so why is it that Oct 15, 2021 is said to be the start of enrollment? Mom didn't enroll in Medicare... 20 years later, what are her options? She doesn't remember enrolling in anything, but since she receives Social-Security, I assume she has Part-A. She lived most of her life in the U.S. (U.S. citizen), but early-retired back to her home country when she was in her 50s. Since she has full health insurance in Vietnam, she never enrolled in Medicare/Medicaid. Now in her 80s, she would like to visit more often (California), but is afraid of not having health-insurance while she is here. So, really, she needs Part B, C, not so much the prescription drugs (Part D). What exactly should be her first step? The Social-Security office is closed for appointments due to Covid. from what I've seen, she will have a huge monthly penalty to pay, but since she was in Vietnam with insurance, her situation may warrant a 'reconsideration request' for a reduced penalty? Alternatively, how can she determine if she qualifies for Medi-cal/medicaid? I understand it's for low-income earners, and it covers the cost of the premiums/penalty of medicare.. she receives a small pension/SS, but not sure about her savings.

Hello Tony & David, I am an Advocate/Activist for the prevention of elder abuse and Rick Black of CEAR gave me Tony your e-mail, I have been on your webinars taking notes about the SNF and what to do and not do. I live in Santa Monica, CA , I helped support a bill that Senator Ben Hueso authored SB1191 and CEDAR Co-sponsored in 2018 and I have supported the bill in 2019 and still supporting Penal Code: 388/368.5 and working with Law Enforcement to help protect our seniors and disabled adults. I am a CNA by trade and been in Home Health Care for over 20 years, I have taken care of every patient imaginable and experienced every family dynamics known to man but no one in health care has had experienced working with such a horrific pandemic as COVID19. I am getting alot of people wanting help because many of their loved ones are in SNF and RCFE. I am advocating for my neighbor as we speak and he is in a SNF and he will be tested for COVID19 and hopefully when he receives his stimulus check he can be discharged. I am wanting to arrange a ZOOM meeting wit you both if possible and invite individuals from my city of Santa Monica and invite within my district Senator Ben Allen and Assemblymember Richard Bloom, I think their constituents need answers not just in my city but statewide ! I have enjoyed your webinars and helped me answer questions to individuals who are reaching out! Mike, a young woman by the name of Daniele will be e-mailing you she sent me this e-mail: Hey Laurie. My grandma contracted COVID-19 and has been in the hospital since last Friday. They want to discharge her this Friday, and I am so worried about her being released back to the SNF that was so neglectful in the first place. How can we put pressure on them so they act diligently? Can we threaten litigation? Go to the press, etc.? I know you're so busy, so please feel free to send me to someone else who might be able to answer this question. Thank you! I know you stated in your webinar that these facilities hold alot of power, so lets focus on the honey and not the vinegar ! I also listened in on the webinar from Consumer Voice on April 24, 2020, I was listening in and was really impressed , however I wasn't able to get a copy of that webinar? Would be able to send to me? I wanted to be in touch with the woman who was speaking if you are able to give me her contact information? Again, I would love to conduct a ZOOM meeting for maybe June 15, 2020 which is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day? If this day dosen't work we can work on making this happen. Thank You BOTH and to CANHR for protecting our seniors and disabled adults. I sent you both an e-mail today... Blessings, Laurie Delgado

Google "annuities terrible investments". Annuity pushers LOVE selling annuities only because they earn a 6 to 12% commission. If they really cared about YOU they would tell you to just buy a broad market ETF or two.
